Clothes modification...

I recently recalled a conversation with Magilicuti about how some dudes he knows wreck their clothes up to look "cooler" such as tearing off a back pocket off their jeans and/or creating holes in strategic places.

Now, I work at Abercrombie & Fitch and upon looking at old catalogues, I realize that their models all wear the current product but similarly altered.

Some of the tricks used are cutting the jeans at the bottom at the seam so they sit lower over the boot (now they already come precut but just in case...) and some short sleeve polos get the collar frayed by running a straight razor along the edge of it. Also, some of the clothes is rubbed on a baseball field to get that worn dirty look.

Anyone into this?
What's your views on this?

I think the idea is to acheive that "vintage" look.

Mind you, most of A&F's shit already has that vintage look by having holes, rips, and fade spots in it already but they further alter the clothes. They call that lineup, "destroyed."

It sells like hotcakes, regardless.

There's various clothing lines for 3 major age groups:

College

High School

Adults

The hottest items are college geared and that's our prime marketing group. There's also a kid's store that's called "abercrombie" in all lowercase. I've never shopped there, before, obviously.

68GT350 - that's really cool that you work & A&F. I'm a little older than college age but still go in there from time to time.

I heard the other day that this fall - there are no rules. Pretty cool, hugh? Everything is in....esp. browns, suedes, bigger purses,....oooops I'm giving fashion advice for the females. hehe

Anyways, I see guys wearing this stuff you mentioned.

I think it's whatever you like and makes you feel good, do you agree?

I think more then ever labels are taking over. I'll admit i buy labels a lot but now you got ppl stepping into an expensive store picking out some tshirt and jeans and coming out like they are all fashionable and shit.

I think the vintage look is not bad. I never shopped at a real vintage store but I'd like to to see how it compares. And its good that ppl have to put their own thing into the clothes to make it look good on them. Instead of ppl just buying name brands like I stated above.

I haven't shopped at A&F in 10 years. I have seen the kids store in the mall. I always thought that after age 22 or something you couldn't buy that stuff anymore without being a clown.

how much per week or month do you spend on clothes?

I'm curious with some of the fashion types on here what the expense is.

how frequently do you get new things, and/or toss out the old?

Can you imagine a team of minimum wage people out in a baseball field scrubbing clothes on the ground?

I spend a lot. It is too random for me to identify a pattern. I spent maybe 10K on work clothes this year, inclusing suits, shoes and all accoutrements (sp?). Sometiems I miss my IT job - Tshirts and jeans all the way. I'll usually add another suit or something every 6 months or so.

I probably spend $1000 per month on clothes, sometimes more. I go to Saks and get things that are on sale - that store is really struggling finanically so they have a lot of good deals on comfortable shit.

I never throw anything out. I still have shit I wore in college. (5 years ago).

Sadly, dressing well is not really appreciated all that much in Jax FL. But I won't be here forever.

HS - are you still in Boston?

yup - still in Boston.

and wow, that is a lot of $$ on clothes, but if you are wearing suits, that can add up fast.

Well, I traded in my IT job and I work with attorneys now. itis probably one of teh last fields that hasn't gone casual. Imagine a lawyer in court with khaki's and a Polo shirt. LOL

I like this place way better, but I miss going Jimmy Buffett casual.

my friend that is an ibanker has to dress backwards - he has to wear suits in the office, and then on sites he has to wear jeans and stuff so as to blend in.
I find that funny :)

A lot of Wall Street places or VC shops (and their ilk - this is the guy from LA right?) went casual to coincide with the Internet explosions since a lot of the founders and executives were "straight out of their garages" and didn't own a suit.

Now they are going back.

The VC group that invested in us is the opposite - they wear jeans at the office, and then they dress up to come here. VC casual is so funny - guys in $300 jeans and $150 polo shirts telling you they work in a 'casual' environment.

yeah - that is the guy in LA. he is in mergers and aquisitions, so if they show up to walk through a factory wearing suits, the guys on the floor will know something is up (strikes and stuff come about, which then can hurt the sale), so they have to go dressed like anyone else that is on the floor so they "blend"

ever think about joining him? Is he helping you to find VC for your own ideas?

I'd f'ing love that job, but don't want to be in LA, that and I don't think they are interested in me since I don't have the econ background that he does. I always try to get him to hire me to do their in house software and was "close" once, but that was about it.

and yeah, I think he is too busy to care about what I do :)
we are all pretty competitive and busy - my newest idea is going to be just fine without any capital, but it will take some time to write it all (mainly b/c I'm tired after work).
I'm really curious to see if it will take off. that is the best part, it can totally fail, but I'm really enjoying it so far. get to learn some cool stuff and watch what happens with it. currently just not sure I have the energy to get the interface done during the week and more likely will have to do weekends on it until it is up and going.

yeah - man I hear you. I try to work on some projects after work as well, but I get tired. I can't always get clarity of thought on weeknights.

Good luck with all that. Go as far as you can without VC....eventually you may need it for a build out or marketing purposes.

Sounds gay to me, I just wear my damn clothes, I'm not a fashion fucking queen, sorry.

Oh I think AF is a great store-- hint hint boachie HHAHAHAH

It's coming, shortstack...it's coming.

Just making sure the new back to school lineup is all recieved. I'm fussy.

HS: I get a signifigant discount since I HAVE to wear complex outfits very similar to the mannequins on display since I am a MIT (manager in training). Their t-shirts run for about 24.95, their long sleeve shirts are about 49.95, their denim and twill runs about 59.95. Those numbers are all US and all retail.

I own about 7 to 9 outfits and must get new stuff every season. I can write it all off come tax time, though.

funny- all my jeans have frayed seams at the bottoms of the legs and usually a hole arpounf the top of at least one of the back pockets and a hole in/around the crotch area
