Clemson Univ - This is kinda lowdown

Long story shortened: Clemson has a football player on scholarship; been on the team 3 years so far. His mother was a drug addict and his father left. He's raising his 11 year old brother at school while he's playing football. He's been hurt last year. Despite all that he's on track to graduate next August with two years eligibility left.

This past month he announces he's leaving the team to concentrate on school. Turns out the TRUTH is that Clemson offered more scholarships than they had this year so they took this guy's scholarship away to give to a high schooler. The player never said why he was leaving. Another teammate let the story out. Other schools like UGA never offer a scholarship they don't actually have. I hope this blows up in their face P.R. wise. Proof college football is a bidness. :(

i can't watch the links right now...but does he have a chance to play on sunday?

I would guess not if they're willing to take his free ride away. They were overloaded at his position so he was seen as expendable. The thing is Clemson got a lot of publicity from this story last season; now they're cutting him loose.

Fucked up shit.

ESPN did a feature on this.

He had to petition the NCAA for help because he was not even allowed free rides for his brother.

But, the ESPN story also brought in huge donations. He received over $100k in donations the first week alone. Clemson stopped releasing the amount of donations he received, rumored to be over $250k total.

So....he's leaving school early, not good enough to start, will not be NFL material, still graduates, and gets to keep the donated money. Plus, he's been receiving free room and board in a specially fitted apartment for him and his bro.

That is good. There is justice after all.

I don't see anything at all indicating the trust fund is over $100K total even today.

I was in the Army with a guy who had a full ride at FSU when they were king shit. He blew out both achilles tendons and they suddenly lost his scholarship papers. Scholarships are like gold for colleges. they make a killing off of these guys.

ESPN did a follow up....it's actually closer to $500k now. A good friend of mine is an assitant soccer coach at Clemson, Mike Potempa. It's actually a well known situation.

This Ray Ray guy has a brand new black corvette with special clemson tiger colored exhaust pipes. He is far from struggling financially.

He was offered a position as graduate assistant on the team, which allows him to take free grad school classes. He's ranked fifth as tailback behind two 2009 first rounders (Davis and Spiller) and two of the best to-be-freshman running backs in the country.

I'll believe that number when I see it in news print.

Bowden is still taking a beating in the media over this. It's a penny wise, pound foolish move. Schools they recruit against are going to tell kids "If you get hurt that could be your scholarship they pull after two years". Georgia never offers a scholarship they don't have. If you sign with them you're set for four years no matter what, even if you quit the team.

Bowden should take a beating....however DT, this is from Dr Phillips, the AD at Clemson. He posted this on the Tigernet email system after the athletic department received 1000's of nasty emails.

While James Davis was not misquoted by the writer in the Charleston story, James did not portray an accurate picture of our scholarship commitment to Ray Ray from a financial standpoint. When the coaches met with Ray Ray, it was made clear to him that if he decided to remain at Clemson, his scholarship would be provided. That includes a commitment from me that we would give him a graduate assistant position within the Clemson Athletic Department after he graduated. Tim Bourret sent out a statement to this effect on Sunday. Perhaps that didn't make the Charleston paper.

From a football standpoint, coaches met with Ray Ray and made it clear to him that he had four talented running backs ahead of him this fall. We have two of the top running backs in our program's history currently on the roster and two of the Top 10 running back signees in the nation are coming to Clemson this fall. If his future goals involves playing professional football, he needs to get on the field. If he is to get on the field, he needs to transfer to another program.

But, he has the option to stay here and have his schooling paid for through the next two years.

Oh....at one point as the fund was nearing almost $250k, Clemson was returning donations asking people to stop. The attornies handling the trust threatened to sue Clemson if they continued telling people to stop donating.

It's pretty simple.......no offense Dialtone.........but to these "corporations" masquerading as academic centers..........black people are still niggers and only useful to perpetuate the sports programs. The extenuating circumstances here are just over abundant. The guy didn't lose his scholarship because he was a fuckup.........he wants to learn AND take care of his brother. A school like Clemson could easily forgo his tuition........or help him get a partial loan or something. This is the kind of guy you bend the fuck over backwards to keep in your school. I guess if he remained an athlete and fucked around campus all day that's all in all better for this school..........ridiculous. Take the bowl games away from these joos.

I don't think it's a racial issue at all. To me it's just an egregious example of a coach putting winning ahead of all else. Bottom line is Clemson KNOWINGLY offered more scholarships than they KNEW they had. They knew when they offered those last 1-2 scholarships they were gonna have to screw somebody ALREADY ON THE TEAM and take theirs away. So what does Bowden do? He goes up to McElrethbey, who was hurt last year, after he's already given his free ride to somebody else and says "pal, you're already 3rd on the depth chart and we've got two studs coming in from high school. You don't have much shot at getting on the field next year. You're on track to graduate in 3 years. Don't you wanna give up football?" We'll make you a grad. assistant and you can keep stats during games.

What does that say to the players that are left? What does that say to a high school kid who is thinking about your scholarship offer? It says man, he'll fuck me over in the name of winning just like the last guy. Yeah, Ray Ray will be fine but there's probably another couple of guys he screwed over in the same way. I dunno bout you but my kid never plays for a guy like that if I can help it.

Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt has always said that once a player signs at Georgia, that player's scholarship is good for all four or five years.

And before anyone talks about how successful Tommy Bowden is. He's been at Clemson since 1999 and hasn't been to ONE SINGLE BCS bowl. That's the longest BCS-less streak of any coach at a BCS conference school. Congrats, Coach....you're a loser AND a jackass.

i'm sure there's more to this story than 2 paragraphs. Maybe that scholarship was football-related, and given to another black male, who joined the team - and has a poor family, alcoholic dad, siblings in prison - and has himself been in/out of gangs.

the competition for scholarships is astronomical. So that emotional card can be played out right back.

Time to join the army!

btw: Clemson is a private entity, not a govt school. So bad PR attempts at private companies always fail. They can always figure something out. Maybe make the President black himself? Voila, problem solved!

It's way easier to rail against the us govt.

Yep, I'm looking for an article I saw the other day about Penn State's football program.

They made $33 Million in money for the school after expenses (travel, coaches salaries, and total amount paid in tuition scholarships).

It's was something like just over $10 Million in expenses, $33 Million profit.

I'm curious what would have happened if Ray Ray was not graduating in August before the new season started.

I remember seeing a graphic during a college game last year that indicated UGA was the top revenue producing team in the country. They made $50 million from "football operations", whatever that entails. That is just a staggering figure. That really should put the kibosh on all arguments that say sports take money from academic interests.

u serious?! "public" as in 100% of it's funding is from taxpayers, and govt employees run the show and taxpayers can demand to be accepted???

Depends on the school though. I could argue against that statement using the University of Maine as an example. All NCCA Division 1 programs except the football team is 1-AA but plays a few D-1 schools like Boston College and Mississippi State.

The taxpayers get fooked every year by having to cover millions while 60 football nerds suck ass every year. Hockey has always been the winner except for this year.

There are also some schools that should be dropped from D-1 to D-2

so these colleges can make 10's of millions of dollars off of those kids, but than the NCAA has the nerve to go after guys like Reggie Bush who were DIRECTLY responsible for their respective schools making that kind of loot.........and for what, a house somebody bought for his parents..?? Jesus christ.

i'll donate to the kid, how can I get him $$?

the get a free education out of it bro
the go into this agreement willingly...what, do you want college players to be played? think how many college sports there are and how much money would have to be distrubuted
would never work

Yeah...because otherwise rich schools could financially bribe the best players to play for them....which kind of happens anyhow.

My best friend was offered a Corvette to play hockey at Boston University from an alumni...

My Counsin received $1000 cash weekly to play basketball at Boston College...and he was a white boy off the bench..

I have no problem with bigger stipends but what Reggie did was actually illegal
