I'm registering for this. Anyone ever do anything like this before? Citizen's arrest! Citizen's arrest!
ROCKVILLE, Md., February 24, 2006—How closely does the work of the Rockville Police Department, and other real-life police organizations, mirror television shows like Law & Order and Crime Scene Investigation?
Find out by participating in the spring session of the Rockville Citizen’s Police Academy, a free, 10-week introduction to the City of Rockville’s Police Department. Classes will meet every Tuesday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. from March 7 through May 9.
The City offers the academy program annually, but this year’s participants will be able to learn even more about how the City works with Montgomery County and state law enforcement officials. Citizens also will see a demonstration of Rockville’s canine unit, learn more about the use of deadly force in police work and gain information about identity theft, gangs and graffiti.
“Many of the post popular television shows today focus on crime investigation or law enforcement, but quite often, they don’t give people a true idea of what police work is like,” said Corporal Jan Seilhamer, Rockville’s community services police officer. “The citizen’s academy is a realistic introduction to what officers do each day. The academy gives those in the class a chance to get to know members of the police and enables them to feel comfortable with us in the community.”
The program covers topics such as patrol operations, criminal law, deadly force and crime scene investigation. A highlight will be a trip to the National Institutes of Health firearms training simulator, where participants can react to “shoot, don’t shoot” situations and test their aim. Participants who complete the program are invited to a special graduation ceremony and will receive a certificate of completion and a t-shirt.
Registration for the spring citizen’s police academy is ongoing until March 7. For more information or to register, contact Seilhamer at 240-314-8922.
