Christmas in Canada

Longhorn85

New member
Much props to all of our Canadian peeps! Just spent a week in North Bay, Ontario with my wife's side of the family for Christmas.

Knee-deep snow, Much Music, Teletoon, Boxing Day shooting on Yonge St, coffee crisps, drinking caesars & rye, paying for grocery store bags, the metric system, bags of milk, nothing but hockey on "sportscentre", loonies and toonies and pretty Canadian currency, eh?

These are just some of the things that I will remember about my Canadian vacation!

I spent X-Mas day in Brampton last year....I ate two bags of chips and a bottle of Power-Ade for dinner out of the vending machines at the hotel. I think the Beer Store was even closed??? Canada? No beer? WTF?

I hate my job sometimes.

Didn't make it to TO. Read in the Star about the shooting incident. Too bad about that 15yr old girl.
Very sad indeed. Glad you had a good Christmas and so nice to see you posting again :)

You should of spent it in Quebec. Hotels have wine and beer in the vending machines. I think they have hookers too.

I do pretty well when I'm not tired, so no need for hookers, but the hotel in Brampton was like 3 clicks from the plant, so I couldn't complain.

QUEBEC???? That's like 2 hours from Toronto, isn't it?

I was there the next day some of the stores on yonge were still closed cause of it. I really hope they go to town on the idiots that did it. What a way to top off an already very violent year in our city makes me sick.

More like 4 and 1/2 hours well that's from Montreal that is.

And Ender, stop your damn noise! :chomp:

Thank you. Your back looks fantastic. I'm considering moving to TO in about a year, how do you like it there?

I absolutely love it. I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather live. Make sure when moving you pick a good neighborhood as I think that is key I live in high park which is almost downtown but still far enough away from hustle and bustle. It is a nice very old neighborhood I know several cops that work in the area told me many a times it is one of they safest areas in the city.

Dood, you're going to scratch out your eyes with all the 'liberals' up here. ;)

Thanks, that is good to know. I'll check it out when I attend a career fair there this spring.

Maybe I can convert a few of 'em. I was reading this week about the upcoming election.

The Quebec PM Martin was blaming the TO politicians for that girl's death before her body was cold. I like the Conservative Candidate.

I'm sure you do, his primary adviser is an American neo-con. Unfortunately for the Conservative supporters, the Conservative Party in Canada can't win an election even after more than a decade of Liberal Party bungling and scandal. :)

You're probably right, but let me change from politics to other Candian-isms.

I bought some groceries and the lady said to me: "would you like bags for that?" I looked at her like she was crazy. Of course I wanted bags, how else would I get it to my car?
Then I realized that I had to pay 5 cents each bag. I took a dozen of 'em.

I ordered coffee at Tim Hortons and the girl asked me, "is that it? just coffee?" Then I remembered that they mix it for you so I said (in my best Canadian accent) "double-double, eh?"

LOL

You must have been at a Food Basics or No Frills, they're the cheapie grocery stores where you have to pay a quarter to get a shopping cart and pay for bags. Regular grocery stores like Loblaws or Dominion don't do that.

It was Price Chopper. I also always get a kick out of the english/french labeling on the food. My kids used to love egg nog until my mother-in-law told them that "Latt de Poll" literally means "Chicken Milk"

Yeah, Price Chopper is the same thing. The english/french labelling and signs are yet another in a long line of concessions to our wonderful countrymen from Quebec who have spent decades sucking our Federal government dry by threatening secession. Assholes.

Also, don't know what environment you'd be looking to live in i.e. in the city or the suburbs. If you're going suburbs, look in Richmond Hill.

I'm old and married but I'm often mistaken for being young and single. I'll check out Richmond Hill too.

If I work in TO I don't want to spend too much time driving to work though.

Burbs also suck for traffic. Wanna live in Richmond Hill? Try Yonge Street on a Monday morning. Gridlock city.

i'm here -- but also sick. waahhhh..

If you work downtown live downtown with in walking distance to a subway. I get to and from work faster on the bus and subawy then driving.

Or try Kitchener. Only takes 1 1/2 hrs to get from Guelph to Waterloo at 5:00.

lol @ everyone in the GTA bashing any area other than the one they live in.

Nicely done with the double-double Longhorn! :D
And Miss. is the worst. You thought that Brampton was bad?

Please, Miss is the best, Brampton is just dirty, and downtown is a giant pain the butt due to parking/traffic.

Lose the car then you will be ok. I know cause of work you can't just saying ;)

:D Yeah, I lived in Parkdale for awhile & later in High Park. Most of my irritation and motivation to move out of that area was due to the parking/traffic situation.. without it, I would probably feel differently. But.. too many good friends/family living far enough away that requires me having a car. :)

Best thing about a large city is there are a lot of choices. Bottom line if I move to TO I'd want a quiet neighborhood with lots of vegetation, parks, shopping, nice schools for my kids but my job downtown, plus a managable commute.

I know, that's a lot to ask.

KW is nice. Traffic sucks. Don't know about clubs, don't drink much. Lots of greenspaces, biking trails. Traffic sucks, Cambridge is a friggin mess, Guelph is nice, traffic sucks.
Did I mention the traffic? Mass transit sucks, yet the city planners can't get their heads outa their asses when it comes to high speed thoroughfares.

It seems that alot of towns have the same problem. I lived in Whitby for two years. NEVER AGAIN! 3+ hour commute when the snow falls! :worried:

niag. falls rawks. plus u can shop in the us whenever u want. windsor is cool too.
Dude Windsor is a shit hole IMO. The falls ain't bad but god how I love Toronto.

Midtown rules!!! Beltline running trail, 3 (soon 4) gyms within a few blocks, close to downtown but doesn't feel like part of it. Yonge & Eg area has a lot of nice little shops.

But TO as a whole has a TON of greenspace; I was on the 56 floor of a building recently in the middle of downtown and all ya see is trees everywhere. Very cool.

High Park sounds the best to me so far. Since there is snow on the ground much of the year, the commute is what concerns me the most.

I knew a guy who lived in Barrie and worked in TO. Don't know how he managed, he must have been driving 2 hrs some days. I don't see how you can have a successful career if you can't even get to work on time.

I also know a guy in Barrie who works in TO. He does get to work one time. I don't know how much he sleeps though. :)

If I had the cash, I'd move to the Yonge / Eglington area. Nice houses. Nice schools. All the necessary stuff is close by.

If there was a high-speed train coming out of Barrie that would be cool because my wife's family is from North Bay and we'd be closer to them. Do you know how far out of TO the metro goes?

I'm sure you can buy a lot more real estate for your dollar in Barrie.

TTC doesn't go that far, but you can always check the GO Transit. I still wouldn't move out there given my previous experiences with GO.

Do the buses run late? Or is the company bad? My limited experience on TO metro and buses is that it is much nicer than Washington DC, at least.

Some of the major TTC routes run 24 hours. That's partially the reason why I moved into the current house that I'm in. Its very close to a main line for the late night rides.

The company itself isn't bad per see; but I'm not sure how well its managed. :)

you gotta pay for the bags in the grocery store. what a hellhole that country is.

We have some stores like that in the US too. I was just giving my Canadian bors and silstas a little ribbing.

I had a great time there.

They've been talking abbout a high speed access between Kitchener & Guelph for over 20 yrs. Traffic gets worse, 30km/h along highway 7, & they still haven't decided anything.

lol

Steeles turns into a major road when you take it from TO to Whitby. They've decided to expand it. As you can imagine, there are several entrance points onto that road once you pass Pickering.

You guessed it. They expanded the road where there weren't entrance points. So, each point now acts like a choke point. :lmao:

Snow's not that bad. It's really only an issue from Dec. to March. I had an architect friend who lived in, shit, I can't remember the name. North of Newmarket on the edge of the Holland Marsh. He did OK, travel wise.

Yeah, the drivers here are fuggin whacked. There's no express route around the city, & the drivers all wanna prove they're Gilles Villeneuve. Lights don't co-ordinate well. My wife used to walk to work, now she drives for protection.

Wow, 25 whole years huh?

There were several chains that tried that to keep costs down and promote the whole environmental thing. I don't think many American shoppers went for it. Cash N Carry, Shoppers, some others.

You just described Richmond Hill exactly. Neighbourhood is quiet and diverse, tons of parks, Montessori schools if you want them, new public schools if you don't, I have every shopping need you could want less than a 2 minute drive from my house, if you work downtown it's a straight run on the subway or 45 minutes if you want to drive.

Sweet. Don't be surprised if you see me scoping your neighborhood when I come up to TO for a job fair this spring.

Longhorn just to so you know my neighbour hood is much like the one you described as well. Tons of green space, lots of schools, depending on where you work down town it would be subway ride of 10-20 minutes, stores with in walking distance. Best selling feature IMO is it is not the burbs ;)

It kinda worries me when you guys talk about "greenspace". Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie.

In Northern Virginia there is nothing but green. You have to look for the "concrete space"

But I guess you're talking about areas close to downtown
