Chinups......any benefit to lats/upper back?

or are they just another glorified bicep builder.

Trying to look for something that will give my lats a kick along. My staple workout is basically pull-ups, deadlifts and barbell rows and although my back width has improved, it's still not good enough.

I use them to start off my back-day. They are a good "warm up" for the lat workout. Just make sure you are wide gripping and really focusing on them.

I used to try to use them as a "finisher" for my back workouts but by then my biceps are so slammed that I find myself cheating and not really hitting the back as much.

But yea I think they should be a staple of any backworkout.

Chins/Pullups can make your back huge.

I'm looking for a 12 page article about them that I'm sure I'll never be able to find.

But the answer to your question as to whether or not they are just glorified biceps curls is NO. They work your whole back

they are better than pulldowns because any motion where you are moving your body through the air is better than when you are pulling weight while stationary provided the resistance is high enough i.e. hanging dumbells off of your waist

IMO, pull-ups (wide grip) is the best back exercice with deadlifts

They work well for me. Heavy Deadlifts followed by full bodyweight+ pullups, then one arm rows and then low seated cable rows. = trashed back. I LOVE IT!

I've finished every back workout off in the past 2 months with chins.

I really like em a lot. Def a must for a good back IMO.

how can you even need to ask this question ..two years a member bro

lol......i do pullups, always have............never done chin-ups though as i always felt they transferred much of the stress away from the back to the biceps. Just curious is all if others have used chin-ups instead of pull-ups and if they felt there was a significant difference between the two.

If you're doing pullups I don't think a switch to chins will magically ignite lat growth.

Try maybe pullovers. It seems like it would pretty directly load lats.

actually i was being a smartass bro..i thought you were using chinups as a loose term to encompass pullups as well (some peeps call chins/pullups the same)-my bad

if you're already doing pullups, like casual said, i'd stick with them

I received my first lifting injury doing 110lb dumbbell pullovers. I had just dropped my pelvis as the weight was overhead and started on the way up when I heard this pop and had a sudden intense pain in the left side. The weight dropped and I got up but didn't feel anything until I took a deep breath! OMG! I about passed out. I was on anti-inflamatories for 12 weeks.

WOW

are we supposed to hold our breath during pullovers to keep everything tight around the chest area?

And to vinyl: If you are feeling it too much in your biceps you need to concentrate on pulling through your ELBOWS.. but in general you're going to feel them more in the biceps no matter how you do them
