Chili

I was wondering what you all thought of this... Like so many people out there, I'm crazy busy and sometimes it's hard for me to feed myself properly. So, I've gotten into the habit of making big pots of chili every week or so. I end up eating chili as the basis of my diet and I'm wondering how bad (or possibly okay) this might be.

I change the ingredients a little every time, but essentially, it's a few pounds of ground beef (sometimes ground pork, too), 3-4 Bell peppers, 2 onions, a lot of chopped celery, 2 cans of kidney beans, a can of Chic peas, and the usual seasonings (garlic, paprika, tumeric, etc). I think it's packed full of more meat and veggies than most chilis.

My big question is do you guys think that it's okay to eat chili as a large part of one's diet? I do try to eat fresh veggies daily, have some brown rice and real meals when I can. I also have a few protein shakes with oatmeal everyday, too. So, what do you guys think?

eating donuts would b alright if they were made from brown rice and chicken. my point is that its all about the ingredients and yours sound great. i think its an awesome base to any diet bulk or cut. if you're cutting id just eat some additional fresh meat and EFA and if you're bulking add some oatmeal or other low GI carb. you're on the right track

Personally I would ditch the ground beef/pork and go with 99% lean ground turkey breast for the meat. That or make sure the ground beef is the extra lean kind.

I wish! Coming by turkey is hard where I live... I still haven't found a place that has fat content of the beef available, so I just have to wing it and try to get the leaner cuts of beef ground up.

beef is by far better than turkey. beef is the king of all protein sources. eat lots of it. your chille is good. figure out the actual macros per serving and add what you need. take some raw broccoli with you and some whole grain bread to eat with it.

Sounds like a delicious receipe, Going to try this one tonight.

I have a great stew mix that I would like to share with everyone. First I will need to calculate all the nutritional fact's, then I'll post it.

^^The exact (or close to exact) nutritional facts always seem to elude me, since I change the recipe a little bit each time. I think I'm close to getting it down, though, so hopefully I can nail down some accurate numbers, too! Thanks again to everyone for the input!

I'm still adding. Maybe this top notch stew might make everybody fat and overweight.
Aahhh, WTF, Ill post it as soon as my calculator decides to stop eating all my paper...

I forgot to mention the base! Usually, I put a can or two of tomato sauce in, and also a couple of cans of diced tomatoes as well. Add on Henry, add on!!!

Finally.

Here is a recipe for a delicious beef stew dinner for the entire family.
Be warned, the kids will beg you to make this again. (at least mine did :))
Bear with me on this one. This is my first attempt at posting a recipe and all the Nutrients.
You may find me making small changes along the way.

You will need:
1 Pound lean hamburger*
1 can whole green beans (I prefer Del Monte)
1 can whole kernel corn (I prefer Del Monte)
1 can of sliced carrots (large can or 2 small)
2 cans whole white potatoes
1 package of beef stew mix (I prefer McCormicks)
1 can/jar good quality beef gravy (I prefer Heinz)
1-2 cups of water
None of these items I use use MSG!
None of these items I use have added salt. The cans of beans & corn will say "no salt added" You will see why in the nutrition facts below.

Start off by browning the hamburger in a large stew kettle or dutch oven.
Drain the fat off the hamburger.
Return the pan with the hamburger to the stove and add 1 can/cup of water
Open all the cans of food, cut the potatoes into quarter pieces.
Start adding all the veggies to the ground beef and water, stir over medium heat.
Add the gravy, then the stew mix.
Heat on medium for 2-4 hours until everything has heated and the sauce has thickened.
You may need to add more water to lighten the sauce if it becomes too thick.
Keep an eye on the food and stir every 10 minutes or so, so it doesn't burn.
Serve with french bread or crackers.
Makes enough food to feed a family of 4 w/ seconds.

*you can use any type of hamburger, just make sure to drain off all the grease.

beef is more anabolic - if you want lean ground beef simply fry the beef then wash in a cullender with water - that will remove the majority of the fat...

i do that.
just take ground beef and chop it up, rinse it off with water. and put a bunch of lemon juice and spices on it.

Just made another batch today... Strained and rinsed the beef, added some more veggies, etc... Tasty!

Lemon juice and beef? Im tryin that! Where are you getting the juice? lemons or from a bottle? And what are the other spices?

BBQ spice. all i use. been doing it for red meat day for months now.
ive eaten over 3lbs of red meat doing this.

i've cooked it with real lemons before.

i prefer lemon juice in a bottle though.
cook the red meat with some garlic also.
it is BOMB.

If you want to cut sodium, and the sugar often added to your canned beans and veggies... rinse all your canned good in a colander in your sink prior to putting them in the chilli to cook, rather than directly from the can and into the pot.
