Child Discipline

Disciplining a child

I remember my mom and pop giving me some serious ass whoopins (that I deserved), but I don't remember her ever beating me in the face like what I just saw on CNN. Any thoughts????

Are they still looking for her or have they found her? What could a kid possibly have done to deserve such a beating? I mean, a kid needs to know right from wrong, but not by getting a fat lip and broken arm.

when they want candy and you say NO. You MUST show them what no means.

sorry about that comment.

That lady is a sick bitch to do such a thing.

Same here, I got my ass beat, my dad sometimes would talk to me quietly, etc, varying techniques. I never got 'beat up' though, my dad was a good man.

i think kids should be locked in a closet when they dont listen. punching them in the face is taking too far. that bitch!

Yeah, I see what you guys are saying. At first when I read it, I was like I know they are not showing a lady giving her a spanking and making a big deal about it. But, then I saw her beating her in the face. That is way out of control. I mean my dad was on that ass with the belt for throwing rocks at cars (I'm from the ole school:) ) He would speak softly and firmly to me for acting like I didn't hear him tell me to do something, or even a hand on the legs for lesser offenses, but it always fit the crime.

My dad liked to mix it up, and yes different people respond do different treatment. I know I felt like shit if my dad cought me doing something, I knew alot of kids who didn't give a fuck.

I received a beating until I was a limp lump on the floor in Bloomingdales as a kid because I lost my mother and had her paged. No one did a single thing about it, ya'll talk big but when confronted with such an act most (not all) wouldn't do a thing. Especially when it's a woman beating her child.

The ONLY reason this case is getting ANY press is because there was some airtime to fill and there's a warrant out for her arrest.

Amen to that bro. That's the point where the man / woman barrier becomes null and void. If I see you abusing a child like that I'm gonna break your jaw. I have a 5 year old and seeing that shit really pisses me off.

yeh, same here......the quieter his voice became; the deeper the shit i was in......the few times he lost control and screamed at me and my bros we got lost for the rest of the day, quickly!!!!!! he could silence us all with one dirty look!!!!! i didn't realize until after i left for college that he was shorter than me!

Damn Vel....
You are right, saying what you would do and doing it are two different things. I would like to think that if I saw a child being abused that I would get in the middle of it.

I agree, I've seen some nasty stuff myself, hard direct facial slaps and such, what can you do? Other than chew the person out, and get a nice "mind your own business asshole" there isn't much you can do, unless you are a serious crusader. In general I think alot of people do NOT care, and would just rather mind thier own business due to the inconvenience, just as much as so many parents would rather let the TV babysit thier kids than read to them.

Velvett -

You bring up a very interesting point. I hate to say this but "times have changed". I remember seeing my father chasing my brother around with a baseball bat when he came home all screwed up on whatever drug he was into at the time and that scene scared the shit out of me. Back then, and on the East Coast, stuff like that happened. West Coast is a totally different story. They teach the kids the CPS phone number in the first and second grade.

The simple truth is that there aren't any repercussions for kids today so you end up with teens saying, "Touch me and I'll call CPS" since they would rather handle a bullshit claim than one with proof. Parents basically can’t lay a hand on their kids or punish them with a slap on the ass without the possibility of the police showing up.

Beating a kid and disciplining them are two different things and I'd love to know what a four year old could possibly do to deserve that type of punishment. If she did that in a public parking lot doesn't that make you question what she would do in private? The topic of child abuse does come up in the news but this one made the headlines due to the closed circuit footage and the fact that she made a scene in the store. Maybe it’s a good thing for that kid that it did happen – if she is the victim of abuse then this might have just saved her life.

Not flaming you, but I think people do care - some are just scared to get involved. Maybe the person hitting will get violent or take it out on the child more when they get home, kwim?? I usually get my hubby to get involved because he can protect himself or if I'm by myself I am the person to get store security involved or I call 911. Maybe this incident was a wake up call..

I totally agree........alot of people talk big but only a few would get involved in real life.

I saw it happen one time and got involved. A friend of a friend was 18 years old and had an infant son. We were at his house and he picked the baby up and started shaking him and telling him to quit crying. I slapped the guy in the face and screamed "What the hell are you doing!" This kid was just laughing about it. I left and called the cops. I'm not sure what ever happened. The cops took a statement from me but I never heard from a prosecutor.

I lost a few friends over that incident but maybe I helped a kid.

mine too.......didnt demand respect he assumed it and it was definately given

even now that im 253 he could still beat my ass.

I just saw the video, and I don't know what the big deal is. The mother slapped the kid a bit with an open hand, and shook her. I agree that she shouldn't have been that harsh, but I've seen and been given worse. Just the other week a kid was beaten to death by his father in my area. I don't think that even made national news. The only reason this story did, was because it was caught on tape. Otherwise, no one would give a shit.

If I ever see someone at a store hitting their child in any inappropriate way, best believe I'm gonna blindside that muthafucka so hard they may not be conscious (and I've got the size & acceleration to do it).

Well I'm gonna catch some flak for this but I think that act would make you almost as bad as the parent.

There are far better ways of dealing with the situation.

God babe :(

I really think I would do something if I saw that, but I guess we really never know until it happens
