Chevy Cavalier Vs a Toyota Corrolla?

curling

New member
Which is the better car for the money? Which will have less maintenence and last longer. I think the corrolla but my employee that wants to borrow for $8,500 from me wants the cavalier and I found that he is even mad at me for suggesting the corrolla.

Am I right or is he right?

imports are more less prone to breaking down, but in the end its what they want to drive,I wouldnt buy a corolla even if it was more relieable

well........typically I would say the corrolla, because toyota does make very durable nice looking cars that are fuel efficient....but the cavalier looks better and GM has been making alot better cars (maintenance wise) lately...But thats just my .02 cents Lol

Toyota Corolla (geeky penny pincher) vs. Chevy Cavalier (sporty and stylish)

I think the corolla.

The quality on it seems to be higher than the cavallier. Which one has a higher resale value?

The car does not make the man. The man makes the car!

Besides. Driving a Cavalier exposes you as white trash. Make sure to get the option package with the extra large ash trey, the NASCAR sticker and the stupid tinted windows... :chomp:

Chexy Cavaliers have one of the worst maintenance records of all small cars..

Toyota Carollas the best..

and considering BOTH cars have parts made in both the US and Japan.. does it really matter in terms of that??

Buy the fucking Toyota.. Chevy cars are absolute shitmobiles

Oh, so what don't you like about it and what year is it?

all that Milo Hobgoblin said.

They are OK the first like 3-4 years and after that they start falling a part. Just dont get any Chevy. If you are looking for quality, go with VW (the Jetta is really nice, I had that too), Honda or Toyota, basicly any foreign car

after 3-4 years is time for a new car in any case

Corolla. Why ?

resell value

reliability

cheap parts

Cavaliers are crap. I'd rather take the bus that driving such a POS...

I dont know shit about cars, but we had problems with the alternator, cooler, it stasrted eating up too much gas, the wheels went croocked. But I guess you would have the same problems with any car.

Just dont get a Cavalier.

Get a AE86 corolla and be a god ....

Go with the toyota, I can't tell you how many friends have had bad experiences with cavaliers ......

Toyota is GOD .....

Are we talking new or used?

New, if he's hell bent on a Chevy, he'd be better off with the Chevy Cobalt or even the Aveo, than a Cavalier. The Cavalier is still built on a platform that's been in production since 1981, it's a dated, unreliable, underperforming piece of crap. It may be the worst motor vehicle you can still buy new in the USA. Comparing a Corrolla to a Cavalier is like comparing a Swiss watch to a Timex.

Used, the Toyota wins by an even greater margin. Toyotas and Hondas are cars that you can put gas in, change the oil every 7500 miles, keep air in the tires, and drive almost forever.

did you just call a Cavaqueer sporty and stylish?

I don't think there's ANY american car that has the resale potential and reliability of a Toyota.

American car manfuacturers are still LIGHT YEARS behind the japanese. American CEO's are old farts who still "just don't get it". They still think the best business model is the one that puts money into the dealer's mechanics hands and new cars into people's driveways faster.

They are both used. I agree with ya'll I even found a expert driving report that recommends that people do NOT purchase the cavalier.

If you weren't a chick, I'd be making tons of :rainbow: comments....

Cavalier = crapalier

I've owned a bunch of Chevys (81 Monte Carlo, 78 Impala, 91 Astro, 88 Beretta GT, 91 S-10 Blazer) and none of them gave me significant problems. The Beretta I was very wary about buying but we needed a car and didn't have many options. Chevy's larger cars are good (meaning V6 or V8, full frame, RWD or 4x4). Their smaller cars are crap.

Corolla will go longer with less money dumped in for maintenance.

Do you see why this question was asked? Does it make sense now?

lol

Guess it shows that the domestic brand brainwashing still exists even today with all the info out there showing they are generally piles of shit when compared with Japanese.

You must be a Cavalier owner. Sporty and stylish??? GM has been making better cars lately??? LOL! What are you smoking. Toyota is a penny pincher??? Umm, a Corolla costs more then a Cavalier (because it's better). The Corolla S (sport) looks pretty nice for an econo car. I know this because some kid down the street has one. Cavaliers are pieces of crap all around.

The new '06 Civic looks awesome I might add.

Hey, I know the cavalier is a piece of crap. But since I am his boss he thinks I treat him like a kid that can't make a decision. I just posted this so I could show him the replies so he would see that other people feel the same way.

You know I get no respect sometimes on this board. I am very smart
& ya'll should know that by now.

The base Corolla is right about the same price as a base Civic, mid $13K. Both great cars for the money, but the Corolla puts down a little bit more power. I know, I've driven both. If you want to compare it with the Civic and Corolla, the Cavalier needs a 2.2L engine to put down 140hp, whereas the Civic is putting down around that much with a 1.8L (in the 06 lineup) and the Corolla BASE model in 05 was putting down 130hp with a 1.7 or 1.8L (I can't remember which engine they're using). Go GM...still need more displacement to put out as much power. I havn't checked the Cobalt's fuel mileage, but I know it's not as good as the Corolla, which you can get for $1K LESS and they'll still be neck and neck on an open road.

GM TRIED to make the Cavalier look "sporty and stylish." When compared to early model Cavaliers, you could say it's "sporty and stylish." It is what it is, an econo box that some people do stupid crap to and think it's fast.

As far as the 06 Civic....Honda is going to new lengths to make things uglier. WTF 2 tier gauge cluster?! That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I like the rest of the interior. If I wanted something performance orientated, however, I'd spend the extra $10K on a WRX or $15K on an EVO VIII.

Chevy didn't change the name form Cavalier to Cobalt for no reason - the Cav has a miserable (though well deserved) reputation for being a poorly made vehicle. Now Chevy has to start over with a new name so people won't associate "Cobalt" with "Cavalier" even though they're really the same thing - it's Chevy's version of an entry level compact. If the Cav wasn't regarded as crap they'd have kept the name around for the new design.

On the other hand, look at Toyota's products - they keep their names through all the platfornm changes. Why? Becasue they are ALL WITHOUT EXCEPTION well-reputed vehicles. That name recognition is used to instill value to consumers.

The Cobalt has a new platform, so that's an improvement. I think the brakes and suspension are better.

Engine wise, however, they're using the same 2.2L. The Cobalt spits out 5hp more. 5hp in a car doesn't even register on the butt dyno.

The name change thing...funny isn't it? You're right, when I think Cavalier I think crap. When I think Civic, Accord, Corolla, Camry, 323, 626, Sentra, Maxima...all those names make me think of cars that are dependable.

I'm gonna give Chevy credit where it's due. Some of their V6s are amazing. The 4.3L is one hell of an engine. My Astro and my Blazer both had it and they ran like no ones business. The 2.8L is another good one. The 3.8L (Olds/Buick, yes, but still GM) is one my mechanic friend raved about. He had a Buick with that engine and he kept saying "when this car dies, I'll get something new." The car already had a ton of miles, he did no maintenance besides oil changes and he beat the piss out of it daily. He couldn't kill the engine, and after almost 3 years of driving it, he finally got a new car because the Buick was so damn ugly he couldn't bear to look at it anymore.

Yeah, the Cobalt is based on a current Opel platform, vs. the Cavalier's 1981 Opel platform.

And it's still an econo box.

I wish someone would inform the idiots about that. Err, I mean, the people that "mod" their "fast" cars to make them "faster."

you ARE treating him like a kid who can't make a decision.

Let me see: Guy asks you money to buy a car, but you are deciding what car he gets, even though is his car?

Is this some form of investment protection? For all that is worth it, he could spend the money on crack hoes, what is important for you is tha he repays you, right?

Let the man have his own car, if he gets a lemon, tough shit, you can always say: I told your sorry ass to go with the Toyota.

Well, yea it is a form of investment protection. He is treating me like a bank so I am going to act like a bank. A bank would turn him down because he has bad credit so if I am going to give him a loan I want the car to run for the duration of the loan copish?

As much fun as it would be to tell him so it is more fun to make money and protect the money that I let him borrow in the first place.
