Check out the new BMW Z4

BMW's new premium two-seater features a fresh new design and all-new chassis.

The all-new BMW Z4 roadster marks another highlight in BMW's new design strategy, and sets new standards for premium roadsters. When its predecessor, the BMW Z3 roadster, was introduced in 1995 (as a ’96 model), it captured people’s attention — in particular with its public debut as James Bond’s new company car in Goldeneye and virtually created the premium roadster segment. Its replacement is so completely revised that it will carry a new designation — BMW Z4.

The new Z4 is a modern interpretation of all the classic roadster features - a long and sweeping hood, a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a low seating position in a cockpit that is set back. The design of the car is all new and characterized by the intriguing interplay of convex and concave surfaces, hard edges and curves. This interplay of surfaces creates new transitions of light and shadow from every angle, giving the Z4 an eye-catching visual character.

The new body offers the roadster aficionado not only a spacious cockpit with a design that echoes the sophisticated nature of the exterior, it also boasts a large luggage compartment offering about nine cubic feet of space, which is large enough for two golf bags. The soft roof comes with a heated glass rear window and folds in a Z-shaped configuration. An integrated tonneau cover eliminates the need for an attachable boot. The available fully automatic top can be raised or lowered in about 10 seconds.

Available with a choice of two high-torque in-line sixes, the Z4 roadster 3.0i (225-horsepower) and the Z4 roadster 2.5i (184-horsepower) offer more than enough power to keep things interesting. The Z4 roadster 3.0i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed STEPTRONIC automatic, while the Z4 roadster 2.5i offers a 5-speed manual or STEPTRONIC automatic. Next spring a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) will be available in both models. The Z4’s handling will establish new benchmarks. The suspension is a modified version of the highly acclaimed suspension from the 3 Series. Dynamic Drive Control (DDC), available as an option, features a “Sport” Button. It provides even more spontaneous acceleration and power at the touch of the gas pedal, quicker steering, as well as an even more aggressive shifting program for the five-speed automatic transmission.

The Z4’s wide track, extremely low center of gravity, optimum 50:50 weight distribution and very precise electric power steering help give the new Z4 its outstanding agility. Fade-free high-performance brakes, standard Run-Flat tires and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with an on-demand traction mode contribute to outstanding safety in all driving situations.

Standard features of the new Z4 include a leather sports steering wheel, sport seats, a rollover safety system, and remote entry system. Options available at extra cost include a DVD-based navigation system with 16:9 display which retracts into the instrument panel, a premium sound system with Carver technology for powerful bass reproduction, and an integrated hands-free phone.

The BMW Z4 roadster will be available for sale in the US market this fall, then will make its appearance in Europe in spring 2003. As before, the new roadster will be built in Spartanburg, SC.

Is it true they are coming up with a 1 series?

Some sort of connection with the Mini Coopers?

After months of speculation, BMW served a welcome surprise by announcing in Geneva, February 2001, that it would be expanding its model offerings with both a 1 and 6 Series. Although official information is quite slim, the puzzle pieces have started to come together, painting a clearer picture of what these range-expanding offerings will be like.
First off, the 1 Series will not be an Isetta redux, nor the much loved 2002 reborn. Rather, it will be a true "series" of models, encompassing several traditional body styles with a volume sales mission. BMW AG CEO, Prof. Joachim Milberg, said these affordable cars will exude BMW virtues, with excellent handling, high quality, and driving pleasure as hallmarks. The 1 will be slotted between the Mini and 3 Series in the lineup.

Rather than employ elements from the stillborn front-drive Rover R30, the 1 Series will use a new BMW-proper rear-drive platform. All-new British engines ranging from 1.2-liter/75-horsepower to 2.0-liter/220-horse turbo are reportedly being considered. Among other things, we expect the four-cylinder engines to be a key distinguishing element separating the 1 from the six-cylinder 3 Series. (If the 3 Series Compact does finally come to the U.S. market, it is expected to boast the 2.5-liter inline six, not a four like last generation.)

At the other end of the spectrum, BMW is planning the return of the number 6, a figure that embodied grand touring over a decade ago. The new 6 will be spun off the next-generation 5 Series (E60) platform, but it will more be than a mere two-door 5. Designated E63 internally, the coupe will benefit from hardware and manufacturing synergies, but push its own style boundaries even further than the 5's reported dynamic design. The 6 Series will showcase modern, progressive styling with a flat nose, protruding wheel arches, and a steeply raked windshield that flows gracefully from the hood into the curved roofline.
BMW prepared the world for this design direction with the gullwinged Z9 show car, and introduced new technology, such as iDrive. A key element to the concept car was the innovative approach to simplifying controls, with a rotary-push knob on the center console communicating with a high-mounted color display. Interior features a 2+2 seat layout with emphasis on personal luxury. Expect a full complement of infotainment, safety, and comfort features (including iDrive) pioneered on the new 7 Series to be shared with this flagship coupe.

The exclusively eight-cylinder powertrains will be shared with the 5, including a rumored tuned V-8 producing upwards of 450 horsepower for the anticipated M6. Transmission choices may include six-speed manual and six-speed Steptronic transmissions, with the M car to receive the six-speed sequential manual gearbox debuting on the 2002 M3. Suspension will likely retain a familiar MacPherson strut front/multilink rear setup with weight-saving aluminum componentry.

Within a year of marketing the premium 6 coupe, a convertible version (E64) will reach showrooms continuing BMW's ambitious new product rollout.

I haven't heard that.

I have heard that they are going to do some new things with the Mini, maybe that's the same thing.

BTW. Since they started building them down here BMW stands for "BUBBA MOTOR WORKS":D

So there is a 1 series.

But it looks ugly.:(

I would rather have a Mini, I couldn't fit in it, but it would be fun to carry around in my truck.:D

Looks nice but from the front not very diff from a m roadster

I don't like how some cars look the same now

The z3 looks the same as the m roadster apart from that side vent

the boxster and the 911 apart from the black plastic thing

bmw m series and 3-5 series apart from under the hood

if i would spend a extra 10-30k on a car i would want it to look quite disitnct from its cheaper counterpart

they've had a z1 in the past. some of the models I saw (just prototypes I think) had cool doors (instead of opening out or up, they just slid down into the car).

they have totally changed the numbering system - the sedans will have odd numbers and the coupes/sports cars will be even if I recall correctly.

and knoxville - you think the Boxeter looks like a 911? that's funny.
there are differences in all of them - they are usually just window dressing, ground effects and such - for the combined reason that it is cheaper to share parts, but also in that many of the people buying these cars like the fact that they are a bit of a hidden strength in there.
as for the Boxter looking like the 911, I disagree - I HATE the boxter and think it is shit - whereas I love the 911. huge difference in body styles.

it is funny - at least with men - people get riled up easily over cars :)

also, if I recall what I read - the BMW 1 series would be similar to the Mercedes A class and the Audi A3 - they are only marketed in markets outside of the states. Paris has a ton of cars that are smaller and would never sell well in the States where it is the land of the Excrusion and the Excessive and all the other SUVs

oh I agree - personally i like the 911 and dispise the box

and there are more differences than just the side vent - but sometimes head on, it takes me a couple seconds to figure which model it is..

my point was indeterminate

The Z-3 is a blast to drive, and they say the Z-4 with the 3.0 will be even better, but I don't see one in my near future.:(

I just love the look and the way they handle.

agreed - at a glance they are harder to read - but the 911 has a bigger ass.
the guy that lives above me has a Boxter S and he waters it everyday and washes it every weekend. I'm not sure what the watering does, but hey, he has a Porsche and I don't :)

my friend has a Z3-M roadster. I really like the coupe - nearly got one, but they are rear wheel drive and not really condusive to the winters here.

one nice thing is even though they are tiny, even the roadsters are still quite safe. my friend wrecked his and wasn't hurt. he has a miata, a z3-m roadster, a ducati, some crap suzuki bike, a new M3, and a viper. it is unclear if he bought a plane, but he does fly.

I must say I envy the fucker.

I drive a 2001 330i and test drove the 325ci convertible today.

and no i don't valet cars.

ooooooohyeah

I don't like the smaller engines, and the new 330s feel more "floaty" to me - I also personally hate the ergomonics of BMWs - but there are the people that love them for their name.

they used to only be associated with the rich, but now they (and all the luxury car companies) are trying to increase profits by doing the obivous - going for a lower common denominator.

I do love the way the z3 coupe looks, and the z8, while I disliked it in some pics I had seen, is amazing in person. and the M5 is just a damn cool car.

Sad to see the Z3 go, but sales were declining majorly. I bet there is a mean waiting list for the new Z4. The plant where these will be manufactured is about 30 minutes from my house, so everybody and their brother here has a beemer....where's mine?????????:(
