Charities

The epicenter was almost right under the capital city in Haiti. That's the area that got the most messed up. DR would have felt it but they would have glasses vibrating and that's it.

And yes, I firmly believe that charities spend about 30% of their donations on stuff that people actually need and the rest on their own businesses. Just because they are "non profit" doesn't mean their execs don't make 200k a year.

I'm confused as to how the earthquake completely fucked up Haiti, but the Dominican is unscathed

That entire area is right under the Caribbean tectonic plate, so it can be crazy anywhere around that area. And the Richter scale measures how much shaking occurs at the surface, but not necessarily how deep the shift occurred. So a shallow 7.5 magnitude earthquake can be locally felt and a deep one would radiate much farther. The other wild card is construction in Haiti -- it's unbelievably terrible. A really aggressive woodpecker could have probably done untold damage as well.

We've got two plants in DR and they did get shaken fairly hard. I wonder if the mountain range between the two countries acted like a shock absorber.

I always tell people "I'll donate to a charity - once their CEO isn't pulling down $5M and having all his buddies as partners to sell the charity supplies and profit big time"

Charity execs just made millions in profits this week. They all thank you for your donations america!

how about wyclef fleecing his own country/charity

they weren't filing tax returns, and in the most recent one, Yele Haiti brought in 1million, and 250k of that went to businesses Wycelf owns or partially owns. Not to mention he asked for a 100k appearance fee for a benefit that didn't even happen, when he was only making 40k an appearance during his peak.

shit like that makes me sick, and why i'll never donate to these causes. not to mention new orleans still isn't completely rebuilt, and we want to dump all this aid on a foreign nation. I feel bad for Haiti, and they need the help, but how about we fix our own backyard first.

I agree. The sad thing is, the biggest skimming scam on the planet is the US federal government. I read a report that estimated at least 40% of all taxpayer dollars are wasted.

They should use the donations to finish off what the earthquake started.

I have a Haitian friend of a friend so no racist!!11

Wanna piss off charities?

Instead of giving them money - start a trend where people ask what supplies they need, where they buy them, and purchase and ship to them yourself. Take away their revenue steam and ability for execs to make $5M a year and $30M a year in owning vendors.

Most supplies are donated, volunteers are unpaid, flights are given away free - where do u think that money goes to? :)
