CHALLENGE me for my next dead session

MnFguy49

New member
I, as I've read about most of you, loooove deadlifts. So somebody give me my next challenge! Give me a weight that is a challenge, but attainable...a weight that I'm not leaving the gym until it falls! My next day for dead training is Monday. My last two dl sessions went like this:

305x3 last Sunday, and yesterday 315x1...I wasn't quitting until I got that 315! Failed on the first, nailed it on the second.

I'm 6'0, weighed in today at 174, and have been doing deadlifts for (only) 2 months...yes, been lifting for a couple years, but only just started deads, shame on me:D

I know this is weak weight :o :D but it's a challenge to me, and I need my next one friends! Somebody psyche me up:mad:

how about 330 or 340 brotha?! i believe you have it in ya!! let make it 340 damn it!! hit that shit brotha...it would be a huge fuckin PR for ya and at 174..it would be a huge one at that!! now go and get that shit!! tb

ARRGHH, I knew you'd be in this thread bro. 340 would be some shit, so 340 it is! I'm gonna psyche myself up from now till Sunday, and hit that hard!
Thanks bro, u fuckin rock

Thanks man, and I won't. I always remember, form FIRST...I do my deads right in front of a mirror, and drop the weight if my form goes bad.

I don't want to be a naysayer but what makes you think you're going to get 340 in good form when you barely got 315 (if it was even in good form)?

How about sticking with a rep range and just adding a small amount of weight each time, rather than trying to add 25 lbs in 1 week? I don't know how to say it nicely, it sounds like you're just setting yourself up for failure and/or injury. There's no reason to even try 340 right now. It will simply be a wasted training session.

Your brand of machismo is what causes many trainees premature injury and frustration. I like to be the voice of reason and responsibility, not "YOU CAN FUCKING DO IT BECAUSE HAVING HUGE BALLS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HAVING A LOWER BACK!"

If you want to be challenged, look within...nothing scarier than your own self. Come face to face with yourself. That's the challenge. Find out what's inside.

Get as much speed as you can off the bottom. You got more in ya brotha!

You will reach a point where you stop progressing if you max out too often. It's good to mix up your routine. You can go light and work on speed and form sometimes.

305 for 3 probably equates to more than 315 for one. you might want considering more time off between deadlift sessions. there are other excercises for the lower back as well. read the stickies figure out where your weaknesses are and work them.

It's fine to set 340 as your next goal. But, if you maxed out at 315 on wednesday, and want to hit 340 on monday, that's one tough fucker. It's not for me to say that you can't, but I wouldn't. I only hit back once a week, and have recently started alternating full deads with rack pulls and GMs, so that I only end up doing deads once every 3 weeks. Hopefully, this will allow me to gain consistent poundage indefinitely, without overtaxing myself.

Go easy on Debaser, I don't think he's trying to piss all over anyone's hard work and aspirations. Even if he does offer an opinion which is often dissenting, he means well. You are free to take his advice or leave it. Listen to everything and then decide what you really want.

I agree! Double body weight aint no joke 340, then onto 350 and 365!! You definately got that shit!! Deadlifts are so mental. Get some caffiene/epdedrine and some converse shoes if possible, makes a huge difference!! Kill that shit!!!!!!!

haha I wouldnt reccomend looking in the mirror during deads, try to tilt your head back real far and focus on a spot on the wall. It helps me majorly when I close my eyes also. Cant tell if Im blacking out. haha

Not to go against you bro, but Ive maxed out every week for over 14 months and have already added 105lbs to my dead in that time. Maybe its different for everyone though. But I never considered deads a strong movement for me. Lots of rack pulls were key to me, along with the right shoes, constant research on here and trying to find the best form.JMO

What you might want to do is warm up something like this:

135x10
225x8
315x1
325x1
335x1
340x1

Something like that...Thats what I do,Kind of ease into the weight...Get a feel for it!

All you guys kick so much ass...your motivation lites a frikkin fire in me!
Here is what my last routine looked like:

135x10
225x8
275x6
295x4
305x3
315x1

I am going to hit that 315 again, and then throw that 25 on there and nail that fucker to the wall:mad: Thanks for the motivation bros!
Debaser, I don't view you as a "naysayer", and thank you for your concern. Trust me, injury is the last thing I want, but I do look to crazy fucks like TB & WB:D for motivation. I haven't been here long, but I see so much dedication from these guys (and everyone else) it's an inspiration.
All you guys are the fuckin BEST:)

good luck to you.

if 315 was your previous max, and you're going for 340, perhaps you chould change some of the reps and weight as you move up in weight.

the work you do between 275-305 seems too much, and it might take too much out of you, leaving you less prepared for the heaviest weights.

i would move down to a lower rep range (1-3) when you move up to weights which are fairly heavy for you. and when it comes to warming up, don't put it in sets that are too close too each other in weight (295 and 305, for example). of course, i don't know how 275 (as an example) feels for you, so the following progression is just an idea.

135x10
225x8
275x3
300x1-2
315x1

keep in mind, i'm fairly new to deadlifts myself, and don't have experience in maxing out. my comments are based solely on what makes sense to me. whatever you do, just do what is needed to accustom yourself to the weight, and no more. leave the bulk of your energy for breaking through new boundaries.

Thanks for the thoughts bro, and I think you're right. I'll keep my reps a little lower for those heavy weights before my max attempt.
Here's a question, when in my back routine should I do deads? I've been doing them as my last exercise. Last routine went:

barbell shrugs
barbell rows
lat pulldwns
various grip cable rows
bent-over row (dumbells)
deads

Looking at that, I easily had over 100 reps in before I did deads...should I do em first? I'd be afraid I'd have no energy for other exercises if I do em first though:D
Also, what exercises have you guys found to be best in helping your dead strength go up?
Thanks bros

I almost always do them first. I maxed out tonight for the first time and hit 315. In a situation like that, I would definitely prioritize them. It will tire you some, but you can still get a good workout with the rest of your back movements. If you're not going really heavy, then you don't have to do them first, but not necessarily last either. If you want to break new ground while deadlifting, try doing them first, when you're most fresh, and see how that feels.

I always do deads first. It can be difficult to finish back afterwards but its worth it if you want to increase your strength. As for exercises, rack pulls help me the most, along with a few heavy sets of abs 3-4x a week.
