CELL PHONE's at the gym

bearfx said:
While at the gym, I keep my cell phone with me, on vibrate. I refrain from talking on it though: rather, if I receive a call that is important enough to interupt my workout, I allow it to go to voice mail, and return the call from the front (off the workout floor).

In general, I find cell phone user's to be annoying. When I use mine, I always try to be courteous, and considerate of those around me. That means I don't stop a conversation to answer the phone, I don't use it in restaurants or at the dinner table, and I almost always have it on vibrate. And you will never, ever, see me talking on my phone while driving.

Problem is, most douchebags don't know what courteous means.

I don't take mine into the gym. I don't have a problem with people who do, just those shmucks so talk on the phone inbetween sets or while sitting on a piece of equipment.

I understand if you're a doctor or fireman... but 99.5% of the people I see in the gym are not either of those, just a moron who can't part it because they might miss a precious phone call.

My girlfriend used to embarass me at restaurants when she would walk over to a person at a table and start asking about their conversation.

To some guy on the train to NYC: "Hey, I couldn't help but overhear that you had a great sales quarter. I just wanted to congratulate you!"

To this college kid at a very nice restaurant (while he's eating with his fellow college dudes): "Sorry to hear that your girlfriend dumped you. I have a friend who is very attractive, fit, and perfect for you. Would you like me to introduce you to him?"

What was once embarassing is now my style. I now do the same thing she does. It's amazing how people realize that others are overhearing their conversations and they shut up! Try it sometime! (Just be bigger than the guy you make comments to.)

When I'm on call at work, I'm required to have my cell phone with me, so I take it in with me for my work outs. I hate taking it though -- even in pocket, it's in the way and I have to take it out of my pocket and set it down for certain excercises. If I do get a call, I just step out of the work out area until I'm finished.

If it were up to me, I don't think I would bother carrying a cell phone. I would buy one with a couple hundred pre-paid minutes and throw it in the glove box for emergencies and call it good enough. They're like an invisible leash in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I "sometimes" have to take mine when i'm on call for work, but it's always on vibrate. Annoying

There are a few guys at my gym with the wireless blue tooth head sets on. I would love to tell them what everyone thinks of them.

i always leave mine in my truck because its the rules of the gym and i want to focus on training so when i see someone on the phone even if i cant hear them talking it jus anoyes me that they think there above me and the other members, last week i actually walked up to a guy and asked him if he was familur witht the rules he said "what" i said "no phones on the floor" he mean mugged me the rest of the time he was at the gym i jus pretended i didnt notice

Whoever here opens up their own commerical gym next should install cellphone jammers all over the gym so no signals get accessed in the workout area.

I have one of those cell phones with the mini keyboard (like a sidekick) and after every couple sets I update my workout journal which I save into the phone, and then every week or so transfer that data into an excel spreadsheet on my pc.

It helps my time between sets go by quickly, and I'm usually listening to tunes so its pretty clear I'm not using the phone for useless chatting but I hope it doesn't annoy everyone around me because I can't stand people who have conversations at the gym on the phone.

That goes for the random conversations too. Especially when its some herb so obviously trying to pick up a girl out of his league.

I dunno I think everyone in my gym thinks I'm crazy because I don't say hi to anyone but the employees, and the occasional nod of acknowledgement to a couple other regulars/frequent spotters. I don't go to the gym to make friends or get laid. Or talk incessantly on a cell phone.

IF - they are allowed it should be under two guidelines:

1 - on vibrate
2 - no talking on equipement or on the gym floor - you have to talk do it outside or in the locker room.

Agreed. My line of work requires me to be availible by cell phone 24/7.
