CELL PHONE USERS: what type of plan do you have?

rnch

ready to get my first cell phone, ma bell is killing me on long distance rates!

what is a good plan being currently offered?

verizon sucks.
sprint has the cheapest rates, but they suck as far as dropping calls.
cingular has the same issue.
at&t is expensive AND sucks.

the only ones that I have an respect for are Voicestream and they are GSM so they work in other countries too - the downside is that GSM is only in major cities in the states - so if you live in an area that doesn't get it, then you can't use it.

my phone rules too (Nokia 8890 - had the 8860 when I had AT&T) ;)

Cingular Wireless

$40/mo for 400 anytime minutes, 3500 night&weekend minutes, rollover, and free LD.

If you don't mind getting 2 bars of signal strength outdoors, and no service indoors, then it's a great plan.

LOL at the "if you don't mind" - exactly.

my current plan is $40 for 600 anytime minutes anywhere in the country. then I get unlimited calls to other Voicestream phones at night, and unlimited weekends.

I use like only part of that.

it started out as one plan and then when I was looking at my account online it popped up a thing offering me the upgrade for free...

also has text messaging and all that shit. you can download ringtones to your phone over the air and shit like that (never bother since I don't care and they cost $1 each).

Qwest.......600 weekday min....3000 weekend min.....1st incoming min free......$49 I think.......... free long distance anytime.

My long distance bill for my office line is about $5 a month.....only long distance I pay for is faxes.

happy:

how's the coverage with voicestream? many dropouts? how's the sound clarity?

sprint was rated #1 by consumer reports. I have 1000 minutes day and 4500 on the weekends for $75 (i get to expense it). The only problem i have with them is Santa Barbara is considered Roaming! Other than that, they have been great.

GSM is one of the technologies used to transmit the data (voice, messages, etc).
it was mainly in Europe and then is now growing in the states.

there are different protocols used - they allow various different things, but the general concept of them is that your data needs to be broken up into smaller parts, compressed, encrypted, and then sent along to various different places so that it eventually finds the intended recipient.

but for you, the main idea is that GSM, this technology, isn't in all places in the states yet. it is growing quickly and in most cities, but not all over just yet.
also, the GSM phones allow you to swap out SIM cards, whereas the other protocols have the card embedded in the phone and aren't user interchangable.

I think www.point.com used to be a good phone site for this stuff - telling you plans and such - not sure if it is still around.

I had verizon and they sucked so I got Nextels which really sucked as far as phone calls. I hence went back to Verizon, and they have seemed to have gotten much better.

"Can you hear me?".....Goood!

i called the voicestream number and talked with a sales rep........she admitted to dropouts b/t cities, said their reception is best around large cities, small towns and interstate travel might suffer from "dead zones".........lotta small towns b/t nawlinz and n.e. tennessee, looks like i'll check out other plans...........

Rnch, in your area I would either try Cingular or Verizon. If the old Bell South or SBC used to be strong in your area, then Cingular would be the one to try.

Also, Cingular is migrating to GSM, as is AT&T (AT&T says they should be finished with the migration by Q2 2003). Verizon and Sprint are staying with CDMA.

Both technologies are good, but since GSM is poised to take over the world, IMO that might be the one to go to if you travel overseas.

If you go with Voicestream or Cingular, get the Motorola P280. This is proof that Motorola is trying to improve user friendliness of their equipment, and I've had users of the phone tell me it's terrific.

I can't comment on rate plans, since they vary from region to region. I have Verizon 600 nationwide plan with 3000 minutes nights and weekends at $86.00 tt&l.

PM me if you have more questions.

I have a company provided AT&T plan and Nokia 3360.
Nationwide Long distance 900 min.

I get all the bells and crap.. Caller ID, Call waiting, Call forwarding, 3 way calling, Text messaging..

Honestly I have not had a single bad issue with the AT&T provider here in Central Fl or a few dozen other larger cities I frequent. Just dial the number and Get my calls. No roaming crap... Yes It is very expensive but I don't pay the bill...

They are looking into changing to Nextel due to shared minutes amoung teams of people and the Walkie Talkie thingy and also Per Second Billing...

I have mixed reviews with the "Breaker 1-9 this is the raging roidhead do you copy come back good buddy" walkie talkie features...

thanks to everyone for ya'll's opinions and advice.

freeballin--u gotta PM.

1500 minutes free anywhere in the USA on peak (Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm) Everything else is free anywhere anytime as long as it is after 7pm Monday thru Friday and of course weekends are free also. I normally wait for the weekend to call all my family and freinds up North. I have call forwarding, call waiting, 3-way calling, voice mail. All this for $53.00

I have Sprint PCS. 2,500 minutes a month. 350 daytime, 2150 night and weekend. It's $39.99 a month. They have a plan that is 3,000 minutes for $29.99. However, this plan didn't work very well for me because the nighttime doesn't start until 9 p.m. for this plan. And you have fewer daytime minutes. That doesn't make sense to me to have fewer daytime minutes more time to use daytime minutes. Go figure.

how old are your parents?? If they are 55 or older have them get the phone for you, they will get a seniorsitizen discount. Just pay the bill. Phone companies don't care who pays the bill as long as it gets paid. I get 3500 minutes a month. pay around $20

There's a local one here in Atlanta called MetroPCS. It's $35 a month without free long distance but it's unlimited minutes anytime. So I just but a phone card for when I need to make a LD calls. Since most of my calls are local it works great for me. I had AT&T before but dump them when my contract was up.

I buy long distance phone cards at Sam's club. They are $20.80 for 600 minutes. That's about $0.035 cents a minute.

With SPrintPCS, you can get nationwide long distance if that is what you are going for. Just check and see what companies and plans are best for your calling area. I had to go with Sprint because they were the only ones that could get a signal in my hometown. Well, a good signal anyway.

DO NOT GET VOICESTREAM, When I first got them they were great. Now I can hardly use my phone anymore.

I don't know what happened, I used to get good reception, now I'm lucky to complete a call.
