cell phone debacle?

so i have this friend... her bf calls her and before she answers she swears she hears "hold on im calling the fat bitch." I wasn't in listening range of the call but she starts flipping out and gets all hysterical yelling at the guy. The dude supposedly denies ever saying it. Is this even possible? to hear someone who is calling you talk before you even answer the phone? Is it more likely that she was just imagining things, or perhaps getting interference from another call? discuss.

Yeah it happens all the time. I've heard someone talking for like a full minute before they even dialed my number. There was also this one time I could hear one of my friends before he even bought his phone.
