Celebrities into MMA's

It's great to see Martial Arts/Grappling getting to be somewhat more "mainstream". The latest I heard was crocodile hunter Steve Irwin trains in MMA and is thinking of competing. LOL. Some other ones I heard of:

Ed O'Neil (Al Bundy)
James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano)
David Lee Roth

A few more I know I'm missing...

Joe Rogan. He has a BB in TKD, and I'm fairly sure he's got an inside ticket to train with some top guys in the MMA world. :D

I heard he challenged Welsley Snipes to a cage fight a while ago. Wonder what happened.

Well Michael Clarke Duncan obviously as he is at every show
and Shaq
I believe I saw Brad Pit there
kinda suprising to hear about Ed Oniel just didn't expect it
oh and Cindy Crawford I think is always there
they love to show those three

Forgot about Kevin James from King of Queens. I remember reading that he was an All State in wrestling back in high school. Now he's been doing BJJ for 7 or 8 years. And Ed O'Neil is one of the best at BJJ as far as celebrities. He's up there in the belt rankings. I was surprised at that too.

I think the question is celebs that DO mixed martial arts, not watch it because it's the hip and trendy thing to do (which it is).

Michael Clarke Duncan: Maybe, but he has films to make. Just a fan.
Shaq: No way he does MMA. If he was hurt, and couldn't play B-ball, people would freak out. Just a fan.
Brad Pitt: Wouldn't want to hurt his pretty face.
Cindy Crawford: See Brad Pitt.
Ed O'Neil: Maybe, but he's pushing 60. I can see him doing walks around the block, not MMA
David Lee Roth: I think he trained in either shotokan or tae kwon do back in the 80's. Other than that, see above for Ed O'Neil. But, he does have a lot of time on his hands.

I saw Paris Hilton there. I'm fairly confident she doesn't even know what MMA stands for. ;)

Umm , So does Jackie Chan , Jet Li , Wesley Snipes , Mark Dacassacos , zhiang XZhi yi ... And ive SEEN the guy Training in Boxing .

Shaq: No way he does MMA. If he was hurt, and couldn't play B-ball, people would freak out. Just a fan.

Why would he get hurt ? Hes 7'2 and like 350 ! Aside from the fact that BJJ is like the HARDEST way to get hurt doign MA ! (but for sme reason Judo is like the easiest - funy , that)

Brad Pitt: Wouldn't want to hurt his pretty face.

Umm ... Brad Pitt hangs out with the guys frim Jackass and LITERALLY plays in Traffic , gets hit by cars , Takes Nut Shots , and does Shopping Carts . BJJ isnt going to hurt the guy any .

Cindy Crawford: See Brad Pitt.

Never heard of her doing MMA , but she might be a friggin Purple belt , how would you know ? isnt she like 6' tall ?

Ed O'Neil: Maybe, but he's pushing 60. I can see him doing walks around the block, not MMA

So is Dan inosanto , but no one says anythign aboutthat old codger ... the guys a Legit BB and earned his Rank . Why cant he get props because hes Famous ?

David Lee Roth: I think he trained in either shotokan or tae kwon do back in the 80's. Other than that, see above for Ed O'Neil. But, he does have a lot of time on his hands.

and a LOT of money , perhaps hes carried his Passion for M into the current ? Oh , and dosent he o Stern's old Radio Show now ? Thats a LOT of work , isnt it ? Arent you up at like 3AM for that ?

I saw Paris Hilton there. I'm fairly confident she doesn't even know what MMA stands for. ;)

Mattress Marital Arts ? Oh Im pretty sure she DOES know ! Weve all seen the Videos !

Well I stand corrected. And there's Michael Clarke Duncan smack dab in the middle.

Still good to see a 60 year old whose still training and reaching brown belt BJJ though.... I'm sure he was good back when he was ramming Kelly's boyfriends head into the wall.

Speaking of Duncan, I heard he got challenged by Bob Sapp outside a premeire party last year. They were talking about having a fight overseas.

I don't watch King of Queens to know who Kevin James is but the Ed O'Neil info suprised me

that'd be cool
um Orlando Bloom has boxed but I dunno if he was any good or not but I know it was a hobby at least
does Chuck Norris count?

Not sure if it's the actor, but I know there's a Will Smith who always places in grappling tournaments when I look at the results. I'm sure he trained with the Gracies' at some point in time for one of his movies. It's the "in" thing to do now in Hollywood. LOL. He made a pretty awesome physical transformation for "Ali" though. Must have gained at least 40 lbs. of muscle throughout the years.

And I'm sure Bundy must be pretty high up there in the ranks. I guess he's been training forever. I remember seeing him in the late 80's when I was in 5th grade posing in a fighting stance in a magazine. Wasn't sure what he was doing back then.

what movie would Will Smith have needed BJJ for?
maybe like you said he would use a movie as an excuse to train in BJJ but I can't recall seeing him do anything at all grappling related

Probably just for the cardio and calorie burning aspects. Celebrities are too good for the elliptical machine. LOL. And now they can tell everyone they trained with the Gracies too.

Brendan Morrison from Vancouver Canucks (best team in the NHL!) trains at my club, and a plethora of other hockey players.

Sean patrick Flannery (connor McManus from BoonDockSaints is a purple belt with an impenetratable guard- trains at a Gracie Barra affiliate school in Vancouver).

The guy from Transporter trains MMA as well

And Stick Fingaz the rapper dude

Let the celebrities practice it, promote it, and compete in it. The more the better. Back in the day alot of people (like my parents) wouldn't even consider watching something like MMA fighting. I couldn't even discuss the fights with anyone because they would'nt know what the hell I was talking about!
Nowadays co-workers, my parents, and alot of other people enjoy watching MMA (my mom and dad-lol). Its cool to see the sport grow after all these years.

I'd like to kick Joe Rogan in his friggin' dome.
if you did hed say something really stupid and Inanie about it really excitedly while you did it , Ill bet .

Options :

1) "he's rocked !" As in "Im Rocked after that Kick !!!"
2) "swinging for the fences !" - "Hes Swinging For The Fences at me !"
3) "TOE TO TOE !" - "Looks like well be going Toe To Toe on this one !"

True.

Guess Bas should do it so Joe won't be awake to say anything.

What I would really like to see is sort of "celebrity death match" pairings. Put on on each UFC card as a warm up before the real action begins.

Joe Rogin vs Westley Snipes
Bob Sapp vs Michael Clarke Duncan

some others to contemplate:

Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Houser) vs Fred Savage (Wonder Years)
Michael Madsen vs Tom Sizemore
Ashley vs Mary-Kate
Kelly Ripa vs Kathie Lee Gifford
Jennifer Aniston vs Angelina Jolie

Chuck Zito is at every fight and I have heard that he is one bad-ass MF. I would like to see him scrap some time.

Is is just me or does Georges St. Pierre look and sound like Jean Claude Van Dammes son?

LOL. I think they'd both crumble after one strike. Like in the cartoons when a skeleton would just fall to pieces with the Xylophone sound effects.

I don't think he's into Martial Arts but I heard Vince Vaughn put some guy in the hospital a few years ago after a bar fight.

And didn't Zito get into a fight with VanDam and Bon Jovi on seperate events?

Zito owned Van Damme in the middle of Scores in New York. He was once his bodyguard, too. He told the story on Stern a few years back....Bon Jovi, I dunno about.

I would like to have a deathmatch with Owen Wilson. I'd like to knock his beak straight.

In the March issue of Men's Health there's a writeup/interview with Stratham. It states he's a "huge MMA fan", but doesn't say what he trains in. I've tried looking up stuff on his martial arts training, but haven't had a lot of luck. From the style of his kicks, I'd hazard a guess at tae kwon do or tang soo do.

Its spiced. I know this champion muay thai fighter, stuntman and actor and hes worked with stratham. Stratham trains at www.francokickboxing.com and Connor McManus trains at www.graciebarra.ca go to gallery, you can see Sean's picture. BTW Sean (connor McManus) is a SUPER cool guy in RL with no ego... guess MA does that to ya.

The Transporter fight scenes are choreographed by Cory Yuen, which I'm sure has all to do with what they look like.

Now...who's getting me that fight with Owen Wilson?

I trained at a BJJ school last night and it turns out Joe Rogan trains there regularly. He showed up and held his own on the mats for 2 hours. You don't really see it on TV but he is one built dude. Big arms, delts, traps - he doesn't mess around.

Karo 'the heat' Parisian was also there and he was taking all comers in preparation for his next fight. Another tough SOB.

No I didn't step up - was feeling a little tired and a lot outmatched skill wise.

I'm 6'3" and 250# very solid and strong and he 5'11" and fights at 170# so the matchup is a little unfair. He would own me on the ground but I would probably knock him out before he could get close to me if we were standing up.

It was also my first time training there and didn't want to make a bad first impression. They have 2 - 3 other UFC fighters in the school and I am looking forward to learning a lot from them.
