my mom let my favorite cat run away when i was in college...he came back 3 years later, but he was all wild and shit.....couldn't hold on to him.

I never let my cats out so there's no reason to I.D. them, but even when we had barn cats we never collared them.

Unless you live in an extremely, extremely rural area letting your cat outside is asking for trouble. Bad things happen sooner or later. If you still insist on putting it out, then get the animal chipped.

Mine dont go outside ; but if they were to get out ; I would want someone to know that they were not strays. :(

I'm sorry ; maybe she will come back soon.

eh...depends on how rural. if you live in a nice suburban area with some land, it's not that bad.

my one cat was definetely an outdoor cat. he'd be out like 60% of the time...go out explore, kill some birds/squirrels/chipmunks, and always find his way back.
he was a crafty badass. he'd jump up and open the sliding door to let himself in and out. and he'd pimp almost anyone into feeding him

I'm sorry, Nicky :worried:

I've taught my cats the front and back doors are "NO!" I just can't take the stress of being afraid that they MIGHT get out, on an extremely high traffic corner.

that sucks man...happened to both my cats at my parents while i was living down here. my mom's never home and my dad is the worst pet caretaker in the world. they were pretty old...like 19 and 16 respectively and lived a long time but they probably got lost/ran away/died because of just stupid negligence

i get pissed/depressed everytime i go back up north

rural area

the thing is my parents take good care of him, but may not give him as much attention as I usually do.

I usually am not a cat fan. But the little guy was a wild cat and the mom couldnt feed him so he looked terrible. He was only a few months old before 'he took us in'. Had him for a couple of years with no probs. He is still kinds wild and runs away from people he doesn't know very well.

We all have to do what we're comfortable with. Me, I've done rescue for too long, I've honestly never known of an outdoor/semi-outdoor cat that did not meet an untimely, and frequently horribly unpleasant, demise.

I simply cannot let any animal of mine outside unattended, psychologically makes me crazy. If I was rural -- I'm talking farm, where you get maybe 5 or 10 cars that pass your place in a day -- different story. The suburban areas I know are all infested with punk ass kids who think torture is a form of amusement and/or idiots who let their dogs run loose.

I know. There were a string of kids poisoning cats in our neighborhood. What kind of kids do that? :( My cats are indoors because of coyotes. I worry more about them being eaten alive. :(

dimented kids

my cat used to come home with patches of hair missing and cuts all over the place. i think he kicked some ass or got his ass kicked and ran away

All my cats have been strays so I could not keep them in, but I trained them to never go too far from the house. They pretty much stay in my back yard
My cats have always had collars with ID tags. I've not lost one yet.
Sorry to hear about your cat. Have your parents put signs up or call the local vets or SPCA's to see if someone found him/her/
Good luck

Sorry about your kitty :(

My cat stays inside -that was the deal we made -I got him declawed, I have to protect him. I never wanted him to be an outdoor kitty anyway so he never was. The one time I tried to put a collar on him he tried to kick it off and got his foot stuck in it. That was pretty funny but if he was by himself he'd be SOL.

No, I don't. My cats are indoor cats and they hate having anything around their necks.

Mine does too but she has escaped a few times at our new house onlyto come home scared or when she's done hunting. She still has her claws. She's my baby bengalcat.

Mine all have collars, with a tag with my cell/address. They're indoor kitties (we have 3), BUT I made the mistake of taking one of them in the car with me and now he tries to get outside every chance he gets! So, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

yep, mine got hit by a car

yes.... collar and tag.

but the big thing here in Amsterdam is to get your pet microchipped. if it gets lost and then found, the animal protection folks can scan the animal to get the owners info. it's great cause lost animals usually have lost their collar and tag.

how about illegal cats? do they get a right for chiptizenship?

My last cat (mittens) yes. He had a leather whatever collar with pretty silver things on it..along with that he had a name tag with his name, address, and my name on it....Even though he was an indoor cat, hahahaha
My current cat, no she has nothing. We tried a collar with her and she went crazy..My mom bought her a pretty purple one with pink stones and she wont wear it.(she lives with my mom)...I would like to get her a name tag though because I fear that she may get out over at my moms because of the dog going in and out and such.

My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat, I let him come and go as he pleases. He's 12 years old, so I guess the plan has worked pretty well so far. No collar, he won't put up with one.

I live in my state's capitol city, in an area that was the suburbs 100 years ago but is now sort of midtown-ish. It seems safe enough for the cat, there are some wooded areas for him to hunt, even though I'm only half a block from the main drag through this area, and a small business district. The cat doesn't appear to ever venture in the direction of the busy street, preferring the more bucolic setting in the opposite direction.

The picture of him in my avatar, by the way, was taken when he was a kitten, on the first day he went outside to prowl on his own.

We're going to need a picture of this one.

I'll work on it. Poor little cat is sic now and they are supposed to give her an IV 2 times a week to help hydrate her and help her kidneys function. MY dad is a softy though and gave it to her 2 times before he decided it was bad for her.
