Opening and closing arguments are a lot like political speeches...soaring rhetoric and little substance; It's the stuff in between that should matter. There are people sitting on death row right now convicted on purely circumstantial cases with less forensic evidence. The difference is this was a high profile case where the defense spent piles of cash to purchase some doubt..Same thing happened with the O.J. along with a little bias from the jury.
Money can purchase a lot of doubt when it comes to dueling experts but 99% of defendants don't have the resources; It was lucky for Casey she's a pretty white girl with a compelling crime story and I'm pretty sure Jose doubled his hourly rate with this case.

The defense can come up with whatever bullshit claims they want to and they don't even have to back them up. The jury had to buy the drowning story. IDK what the jury was thinking. The alternate juror said that they thought it was a terrible accident that was covered up by the family. Are you kidding me? I watched most of that entire trial until the end when I began to lose interest. I don't know how they came to that conclusion.
