Career in Accounting?

Big Mike123

New member
Hi, I'm interested in pursuing a career in accounting. I will be going to college this upcoming fall. Is anyone an accountant here or knows anybody who is one? The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to know whether accountants make good money or not. In addition, is the job hard and if you're an accountant, do you enjoy doing what you're doing?

Thanks a lot:)

You'll always have work.

CPA designation is a must. (Tough exam but there are 10000000 prep course and plenty of people pass it)

Can make 6 figures witha good firm.

Some executive opportunities like CFO-type jobs allow for very high earnings.

You have to have a love for what most people consider mundane: counting dollars, taxes and tax law.

The job is hard, like anything else, if you want to do well, expect to work for it. Top accountancies are filled with smart people looking for those high-end opportunities.

I am not accountant. I would never do this, it's not dynamic enough for me (although there are changes every year).

good luck

It's a good career option but you should go with a duel major.

I will be considering this as a major come college next year, along with international finance and marketing. :)
Seems like a nice job, but dunno if it's worth the time.

im looking into getting my CA after university

i like accounting, not love it, but I know that it also opens up a lot of executive position opportunities later on. My best friend's dad started off as a lowest rung accountant right out of university making like $25,000 a year. By the time he was 40, he had $4 million annual salary as president of a major real estate firm. He now makes $7 million a year, as well as the company buying him an $11 million home and a BMW M5.

obviously im not expecting this to happen, but it shows how accounting can lead to something more. Idealy I'd be happy with landing a VP position somsewhere later in life, but anythign better would be sweet too.

I like accounting since I like to work with numbers. I always loved math, I guess:D Plus, it's a clean job in a clean environment, not to mention the salary, of course.

My last real job was with a financial division of a major telecom company.

I was one of probably 10-12 NON-accountants/financial analysts.

They were all good people, but for god's sakes, you'd think they were DOA when talking to them.

Couple of cute girls that I hoped would be freaks outta the office. One turned out to be as scandalous as they come.

Sorry, no real point to this post.

What makes you say that?

WITH ACCOUNTING, YOUR JOB CHOICES ARE LIMITED. WITH FINANCE, YOU CAN DO SO MUCH MORE (HENCE MORE A CHANCE TO MAKE MORE MONEY). ALSO, READ MATT'S POST AGAIN. HE SUMS IT UP ABOUT ACCOUNTING.

I NVR DREAMED I WOULD LIKE FINANCE, BUT I LOVE IT. I LIKE ALL MY CLASSES AND ACTUALLY ENJOY THEM.

Bro I almost became an accountnant because I know like every number there is, but its jsut not worth it if you want to pull bitches. Broads want you to have money not know how to talk about it all day and add it up. If I didn't make so much from training fat lard buckets all day i'd totally account things for a living.

hey KAYNE i don't like to talk about how much I make, but trust me its enough to keep a roof under my head. If you want to talk numbers lets talk about what youre lifting in the gym. I go heavy and hard when i'm in the gym or else i don't go home. I got a bigger bench than the miami dolphins LOL Hit it hard bro i'll talk to you later

I'M MAXING SOMEWHERE AROUND 150. I'VE NVR TRIED IT BY MYSELF THOUGH. YOU THINK YOU CAN HIT THAT WITH NO SPOT? I'M TOO SCARED I'M GOING TO DROP THE BAR ON MY NECK. IF I DONT GO HARD, I DONT GO HOME EITHER.

Hehe you seem like a good bro but i just want to make sure your not pulling my chain about that 150 bench cuz i was thrownig up way more than that before i did my first heavy cycle of dbombs and abols. i know most of it was water wait but i still grew like a tweed. it wasnt until i hit 240 pounds that i started throwing up real #s on bench like way higher than most people can count without a calulater LOL get it. its like last sunday when i was in church wearing my GOT BENCH shirt and people, were lookingat me like i was some kind of monster. but when your stacked liek this you get used to those looks just from the gym.

GO HOME AND GO HEAVY

YOU THINK YOU CAN MAYBE GIVE ME A JOB WITH YOU. I CAN KEEP GOING TO THE WATER MACHINES AND GETTING YOU NEW WATER BOTTLES WHILE YOU ARE TRAINING SOMEONE, I CAN GET YOU NEW TOWELS TO WIPE YOUR SWEAT OFF THE BENCH AFTER A HEAVEY SET TO. I CAN BE A BIG HELP IN YOUR TRAINING SESSIONS. I'LL WORK FOR FREE BUT I WANT YOU TO TEACH ME HOW TO BE MORE LIKE YOU. IS THAT COOL?

ALSO, CAN YOU GET ME SOME ABOLS AND DBOMBS??? THOSE MUST BE GOOD IF YOU ARE TAKING THEM.

I don't wanna discredit either accounting or finance, but one thing accounting has on finance is better job possibilities.

As for accounting, i personally cannot imagine it as a career. But thats just me. I had to take two classes in college and the fact that people can do that everyday is beyond me. It's a pretty soulless and lifeless way to spend the majority of your life with the hours it can call for. I would opt for working construction before I would accounting. And i truly mean that. But to each's own. If you do it and like it, more power to you. Just my outlook.

A career in accounting is a very wise choice. I currently teach in the graduate section of the school of accountancy (Macc and Ph.D). I highly suggest you look into going through a B.S/A in accounting than moving on to a masters; thus, fulfilling the 150hrs needed (not considering the work experience) to get your CPA. I would also recommend that in your senior year you should take the CMA/CFM, CIA, CFE, CFA and the CPA exams. They are different fields/venues of accounting, but when you get out into the work force, the employer considers you very qualified and trustworthy for any task at hand. Plus, the pay range dramatically increases.

I noticed someone mentioned CFO positions, I would have to agree that you cannot become a CFO or CEO if you didn't go through the finance/accounting department. Thus, it's a wise choice to look ahead and see what your goals are long term, then decide the outcome of your present steps.

in a nutshell, finance is how you got the money to perform business operations. Accounting is where this and all other financial aspects are recorded, and reported.
