Ok here is my question and i bet this has been dabated before. lets say first thing in the morning you wake up on an empty stomach and do cardio, right after that you lift (followed by a PWO shake)...is doing cardio first then lifting right after counter productive?? would you wake up first have something to eat lift then do cardio?? i know best case scenario is splitting both through out the day, but this is what im stuck with..

WHat are your goals?

I think lifting with nothing in your stomach is not a good idea.

IMHO, you should switch it - drink a protein shake with a small amount of carbs, then lift, then do cardio.

right now im trying to maintain lean muscle mass, but im trying to get down to 13-14% BF currently at 17%....i was adviced to do lift first, then do cardio..followed by a PWO...see how that goes.

Doing cardio on a empty stomach is muscle suicide. You need to suppress cortisol from the night fast as soon as you wake up. Have some oats before any training.
Obviously, if you're cutting, reduce the amount of oats.

On an empty stomach, your body will use the most readily available energy - muscle glycogen. Then, you'd burn muscles stupidily. Like I said, have some oats, and then do some long duration cardio-medium intensity (65% max HR) for maximum fat burning. (Or HIIT, which is a proven and very method too)

Doing cardio before weightlifting is not optimal. It will deplete your glycogen stores and your lifting will suffer. Doing cardio right after your weightlifting is out of question. At the time, you must be consuming your PWO shake, and nothing else.
You have to separate cardio from lifting by 6 to 8 hours.

For people who REALLY doesn't have the time to separate them, I'd suggest to do cardio first. You have to keep in mind that it's not optimal and as I said, you'll be already tired. Why not after ? PWO Shake. The most important meal with morning's one. You HAVE to consume it and not do anything else as soon as you've finished working out. Doing cardio at that time will be stupid, that will be killing your gains.

Hope that helps.

Good post, but i tend to lift in the PM say around 9pm...how if any would that be different saying that i have consumbed a good amount of protein and complex carbs throughout the day? would your advice still apply in that scenario?

Of course, it's better in the morning, but you still can do every good in the PM. But first I need to know what are your goals ? Are you cutting or bulking ?
In case you're cutting, I'd suggest you to go for long duration cardio (30-60 minutes), medium intensity (65% of your maximum HR). You body starts to greatly rely on fat stores as a source of energy after 30 minutes. At 60 minutes, fat is used at 99%. That's optimal for fat burning.
If you're bulking, my suggestion would be one to two cardio session a week, HIIT.
Tell me more about your goals.

If you cant split them up, I'd suggest doing cardio after lifting, only because if you lift after cardio you will be tired already. Just my opinion, and thats how i do it. I hope this helps.
