Cardio Question

Swimming VS HIIT

I absolutley hate running or the stationary bike, yes i know lazy, but something I do love is swimming. Would i get the same effects if i swam on an empty stomach in the morning as apposed to HIIT?

I know diet is a big thing and i watch what i eat.

I know that swimming is more of a total body workout but it is a cardiovascular exercise.

Any input is appreciated and a thanks in advance.

Why can't you do High Intensity Interval Swimming?

Swimming is different and will affect the body differently than running, but the principle of elevating the heart rate via high intensity so that it stays elevated over a subsequent less intense period for increased calorie burning carries over to swimming laps.

So if i swam laps than that should be fine then right?

The same principles and metabolic advantages of high intensity cardio apply. Something doesn't cease to be HIIT just because you're not doing it on a "cardio machine" and wearing your Spandex as swimming briefs rather than tights.

So do, say, one lap at a high intensity, then two laps of active rest (lower pace), and repeat.

Some friends of mine are water polo players, and probably in the best overall shape of any people i know. Even though water polo is much more of an endurance sport, in their off season they do sprint work in the pool. 50m as hard as you can go, rest for 30 seconds, then 50m at 50%, and then rest for another 30 seconds. Repeat for 30 mins and you'll wanna die, but boy will that work for you.

p.s. they will vary the strokes sometimes if they're bored. fly and breast are good, but form is important. if you don't know it, don't do it.
