cardio before or after workout?

Should cardio be done before your workout or after? When I do cardio before my workout, I feel like I don't have enough energy for my lift. Others have told me that you shouldn't run after you work out if you want to increase your muscle mass. I think that sounds like bs but i duno

Can you not do the cardio in the a.m and the wieghts p.m? If it were me, I'd do the weights then cardio, and at the end grab some heavy weights for one short set of 3 reps to feel strong again.

LOL, I do this! After the post workout cardio I feel like I just negated all the work I did lifting, so I will hammer out one more heavy set and then take down the PWO eatin'

I have only been back at it for about 6-7 weeks now, I have been running 3 miles prior to lifting. I don't feel too drained to lift and the gains I have made seem to be right on for the short time.

Can someone detail a little what teh advantage of waiting on the cardio is?

thanks...

Like sarge said ... cardio can be done before & after depending on your goals ...

Like MM says when you do cardio BEFORE hitting the weights you are using up the energy your cells produce and you REQUIRE to improve your lifts... you're depleting THAT ENERGY & wasting it on the cardio = NOT GOOD for building muscle...

I use to prefer to split the day if you can ... cardio in the a.m and the weights p.m., but if you are weight training on the same day ... cardio POST workout ...

Ok... Ripped/Cut/Shredded = done in the kitchen. PERIOD.

Abs are not made in the gym.

/quickeducationseminar

We weight train to keep (possibly even gain some) our muscle while we cut calories, some do cardio to help the cutting process along quicker.... some don't because they feel as though they loose muscle mass that way.

Ok... you want what we all do... put on muscle, decrease BF, have some abs to show off :)

Train your ass off, eat clean (OFTEN throughout the day), stay hydrated, do cardio after lifting or on "off" lifting days. And you WILL be very happy with your physique.... maybe not your social life, but that's ok
^^ Agreed ... also if you want to build up your abs then you have to train for it in the gym ... diet (and to a limited extent cardio, AGAIN user dependant) will sheer the fat off ...

no prob.

Yeah, I came here and threw most everything I ever knew out the window. Soooooo much to learn here... soak it up.
:wavey: YUP.. and look at where we got by applying what we learned ... :D

over the last few weeks I got rid of 90% of the stuff I thought I "knew" about lifting

the diet: It's pretty bland, but I don't mind exactly. Dinner I don't have to much control over, just eat what is at the house. I usually work out around 3 so I try to get most of my complex carbs in before that, then mostly protein and vegtables.

Breakfast: 2slices of whole wheat toast, 1 serving of quaker oatmeal, 3 eggs(yoke&whites)
snack: bannana, 1 can of tuna fish with light mayo on whole wheat
Lunch: peanut butter sandwhich on wheat, salad with chicken or tuna
snack: raisins, grilled chicken breast(or dinner leftovers) and a protein shake
dinner: usually some protein source and a vegtable/salad mix
snack: Protein shake
put your foods in www.fitday.com .. i wanna see the cals & macros (%'s on Protein carbs & Fats) please :)
