(Car fans) Manual vs Auto

Will automatic trannies ever become advanced enough to render the more favorable manuals obsolete? Often these days you find racers stating it's simply a matter of preference, while others say they an automatic simply isn't as responsive as a clutch shifter, regarding the car/driver relationship.

I personally think automatics have come a long way, but manuals still yield a higher rate of control to the driver.

I drive a late model manuel, perfect shifting... autos suck IMO... but my next vehicle will be one... kinda sick of driving manuels, now.

I'll get my manuel shifting kicks from a motorcycle once I get an auto.

Yeah the main advantage of automatics is convenience. :verygood:

They already do.

The new Porsche 911 Turbo does the 0-60 in 3.7 sec. with manual and 3.4 seconds with auto. Mercedes has already proven that their 5 speed and 7 speed auto could outperform most manuals.

That's why sequential gearbox (SMG, DSG, F1, S-Tronic....) is the best of both world: there's still a clutch but you dont have to bother with this crap. Will operate the clutch for you so fast that no human being could ever come close to that.

So this is being used more often in racing now? I remember when they first debuted and thinking how cool it was to be able to shift by simply tapping the shifter.

IMO the F-1 style... paddle shifting is :rainbow:

I'd rather have a traditional clutch and KNOW exactly where the friction zone is...

then again, i'm just speaking about driving for fun and not proffesionally.

Might as well be an auto if there's a paddle shifting option... no fun.

RX-8 ... i want to test drive that and see how the rotary engine performs... looks like a fun car!

Yup, big difference between ricer and racer.

:) Indeed... let's just say my car would be ricer... but I have the v-6 model with a 6-speed

Why, what is it?

BMW (SMG II) has it on the M3, M5 and M6.

VW (DSG) on the Gold GTI, Passat V6 and others.

Audi (DSG but now called S-Tronic) on the TT 3.2

then you have Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati....

The R32 VW still a 6 speed isn't it?

Also available with DSG. In fact i believe the last year they came with DSG only just like the TT 3.2 which shares the same engine/drivetrain.

Agree with Manny, if you're in it strictly for the numbers, the automatic is already there.

Personally I'm more into the driving experience, and I still prefer a manual with a floor shift. I just think it's more fun.

I drive automatics. The only way I learned to drive a stick was when I was pregnant. I wanted pop corn and hubby wouldnt go to the store, so I said screw it and drove myself. Must say I only stalled 2 times!
Any how, I think Manual is far better. However I dont tell my hubby that. Until me all he drove was manual, but I had not learned yet and we needed a car that I could drive.

Only cars worth having a stick shift is the sports cars like vettes, ferrari, lamborghinis. Its just more conveinent to have an automatic..

manual if u dont' have to deal with fucking 16 hours of traffic every day.

otherwise automatic. i can't wait til one day they combine the two.

It's done, it's called sequential.
