I was stuck on the elevator with some people today who were staunch supports of the NDP. They were talking about how "evil" the US is with the capitalism and how the government should do more to control car insurance rates.
At this point, I laughed aloud.
They asked me what was my problem. I asked them how was the government going to pay for their ideas? They responded by taxing the upper class more to pay for services for the lower. I asked why would they do that?
As PW said to me once, they responded by saying that the upper class (100k+) has "enough" and should share.
I responded to them that a person earning 100k has most of it taken away from taxes, mortgage, and living expenses. They responded, by saying that the person still had some money left over and that they should be paying for those who do not.
I asked them for $20 and said that I was poor and they had money. They told me to fuck off and called me an elitest pig. At this point, they gave me the finger and left the elevator.
Damn public broadcasting (we're in the same building).
I've recently noticed that I've had these conversation alot lately with various groups (teachers, ministers, accountants). On a more interesting note, the people I know who were small business owners (SBO) were not supporters of the NDP (go figure!).
So, I'm beginning to wonder if anyone in Canada (other then the SBO) will understand the "smaller government, freer market idea"?
