Can Whey be stored in liquid?

Hey everyone, I'm a bit of a newcomer to this board and somewhat to weightlifting in general. My question may be stupid, but on the directions on my whey protein powder, it says to mix into milk or water and "drink immediately." Does whey degrade if it isn't drank immediately? For example, if I mixed a protein shake in milk at night to take with me to drink at work the next day? My apologies if this is a dumb question!

Well a couple things. First off, why do you need to mix it the night before instead of before you leave for work? Second, if you're not going to drink it immediately, I'm assuming you have a fridge to put the shake in. So why not just bring some milk to work, keep it there, and every day just bring the powder in a shaker cup, then when you want, put some milk in, shake it up, and drink. Don't know if that's an option or not for you. Even if you bring the milk in the shaker cup, some protein in a small container, mix it when you want to drink it.

That's a good idea. Don't know why I never thought of that. So whey powder is best if drank immediately after mixing then?

I've been blender mixing my Whey with milk before leaving for work for at least a decade. I doubt if pre mixing it 8 hours before drinking it will cause any loss of nutrients. My 2cc.

I'm not sure, but i think the protein begins to breakdown if you don't drink it after a while.

the protein won't break down! even if it did it would break down during the digestion/absorption process in any case!

i pre mix a shake before i go to the office and i don't see any difference.

The main issue with this is the fact that when mixed with a liquid, whey protein becomes a nutrient-rich soup for bacteria. Thus, by leaving it sitting around, some people experience a terrible smell/taste associated with it.

Personally, I avoid pre-mixing the whey protein and simply throw in some water when its time to drink it. But you shouldn't be too worried about it dude...

Isn't there bottled protein drinks? I would think if they sell premixed bottled protein drinks then it is ok for awhile. Sometimes I mix it and take to work and leave in the fridge for a few hours. No difference that I can tell. I think as long as most proteins don't get very hot then they are ok.

Difference with prebottled is they are sterilized and sealed to ensure freshness. Mixing yourself and leaving at room temp is asking for a upset stomach. I see no reason why you couldn't mix it up and keep it refridgerated for small periods of time though. I used to mix them up before bed, so if I woke up I could drink it at night.

That is a good point about the bottled drinks. That raises another question in my mind. From what I have learned it seems that if protein is sterilized with heat then that would make the protein in them denatured or unuseable.
