Can someone explain this to me... it's about drinking water!

When people say you should drink lots of water a day why does it have to be pure water, why can't you add cordial or some sort of flavouring to it, for example if you drank 10 pints of tea/coffee in day, which is 90% water (depending on how you have it) is that the same as having the eqivalent amount of water on its own?!
This has always baffled me and I have only just remembered to ask, help is much appreciated with karma!

Remember that tea/coffee/diet soda's/those types of things have caffeine in them which can actually dehydrate you as they make you urinate more.

No replacement for pure water.

Actually I recently read somewhere (don't remember where now so no link) that caffeine doesn't dehydrate as much as originally thought especially in fitter people, so you still get the water benefit.

If I find where I read that I'll post it up but thought it was interesting....
