You need "green" coffee beans. These are unroasted beans and are light green in color. You need a roaster. I've never seen one in any retail store, or even in housewares place like Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I bought mine online. The brand name is Fresh Roast. I think it was about $90. This may sound pricey but actually buying green beans in bulk (5lbs or more) will actually recoup the price of the roaster in six months or so. Dont worry about buying in bulk because green beans main absolutely fresh for up to 2 years provided they're kept in a dark, dry place....they do not not need to be refrigerated. It's best to keep them in the burlap bag they'll be shipped in.
The site below is where I buy my beans. I recommend the Columbian Peaberry Caracol de Narino for starters. Roast them 4 minutes, then let them "cure" at least 4 hours so do the roasting the night before. Grind only what you need for immediate drinking. After 4 days roasted whole beans begin to lose their flavor so be careful why much you roast at a time. http://www.coffeebeancoral.com/matrix.asp?
