This is roughly what I am going to build for a large empty area currently in my kitchen.

Id go plain tile. I dont know that you'd really want a wood band around the edge of a counter top.

But the pros would be the ones to ask. Stillabro, Velvett and AAPartyPants

as long as when she's sitting on top of it, her software lines up with your hard drive, whotf cares what it looks like??

i like #3. . .it's the most complicated and will be much more eye-catching. . .assuming that's what you're going for. . .

you wood?

lololol, I'm so funny.

I just thought it might add some beauty instead of being so simplistic. I could be wrong, though that would be a first.

Is that bar height or regular countertop height?

Mine is bar height. I got it skethed at HD and the "designer" there asked me to sign a paper that stated she informed me it was not a good idea to have it at bar height with the higher stools. lol It turned out great in my application. Depends on where your counter is situated. Is it facing another room or a wall or what?

pics!

I could complete all three around the same time. Actually the option you like would probably take less time since I won't have as many tiles to cut, set, and grout.

WTF? All I want is which looks better aestheticly, not get into specifications.

Actually the height will be 40 inches with 30 inch tall stools. So taller than the kitchen counters, but not too tall because my ceiling is low.

hmmm less time, less cutting, less grout (which also equals easier cleanup in the future). . .i think we have a winner :)

I'd go 3 without the decorative wood trim. Lets see your tile choices.

I recently tiled a backsplash in the kitchen. The color is Allure, which is gray with a hint of white swirled throughout.

I was going to do this bar to match.

Gonelifting, the bar is going to extend out from the wall where the table is in the pic below. I removed the table and now have about 18'-0" X 15'-0" of open area.

I actually think you suck at CAD and should find a new job... I would have gone with an upper edge and did it 3d or something with actual texture and shizzle. But I am better than you.

anyway, go plain tile, something that can be fluent

We hire women to do that stuff.

Then beat them if they dont do it the way we like.

You should come work for us!

I'm looking to relocate... but I've already beat your ass so, it wouldn't be all that exciting.

Depends on what your colors end up being...if still blue and orange......None of the plans will work.

lol hush you

my kitchen currently looks like the pic posted a few posts up.

The colors of this bar will be colors already present in that pic

I would say neither and replace the tile with either granite or at the very least corian assuming you dont mind the cost of granite. Just my preferrence but your tile options are quite common.

I am wondering how you are planning on attaching your wood trim to the outside of your tile. It will cause more problems than it is worth. It will be a prime breeding ground for bacteria and you will probably have issues with water getting behind it. If you are thinking liquid nails it will eventually come apart on you.

wood trim is a bitch after years of cleaning, starts to look like shit.

If ya keep it simple, they look better years down the road.

Just sayin

This is a budget remodeling job, so granite is out of the question for now.

the trim wont be attached to the tile. I will have to cut the tile for above and below the trim.

If it won't be too much trouble and money, I'd do one. If it's MUCH easier, I'd do 2. NEVER 3. Do NOT do three.

Also, the grout can give you problems on the counter. At least it's better than wood(3). but I hear you on the cost thing....

Good luck.

After pics!

Oh, try and throw some lights over the counter. Maybe 3 in a row of miniature recessed, or 3 hanging lights. pendants. I got that on mine and it looks pretty good and it's useful as well.

Why not 3? because of the wood over time issue?

Obviously I will use a waterproof adhesive for the tiles, and I will have to be very generous with the grout sealer.

I already bought a LCD tv to go on the wall where the bar is and have the lighting to go over this area.

Pics will be posted for sure. Hopefully I can complete this thing this weekend.

Nice visual feature, but,
the horizontal (top) surface of "wood trim" will catch dirt, and stick out.
Embedding or inlaying the wood, would probably be a hastle though.
Maybe you were intending a more half round wood moulding type profile anyway.

yeah, best not to have any horizontal surfaces in your house.

You could also make yourself a sweet wood top.

Get some 5/4 join, sand and voila - you're creative - I know this place up north that has beautiful walnut at a great price. You just have to plane it, cut it down and join it.

I can show you some pics of a vanity I just had made from it.

God, it would patina beautifully.

Hell you could make it from pine and just stain it.

I would put bullnose decorative tiles around the edges for extra detail. I wouldn't use wood on counters because you have to be so careful that it doesn't harbor bacteria. You would always have to be disenfecting them to prevent salmonella, etc.

Well, actually that's not true.

Wood tops actually have stronger anti-bacterial properties than almost any other cutting surface. There have been studies done on this as well - I'd have to dig them out, they were done back in the last 90's if I recall.

Mineral oil is all you need to keep a wood top beautiul.

Okay, I went with option #3. I built the whole thing Friday on my day off.

I laid the tiles yesterday and will grout either tonight or tommorrow after the thinset dries.

I shall then post pics.....It looks very nice currently and I am pleased.

where are the pics of the kitchen? did you finish it yet?

The wood has a thick clear coat spray plus I may add a clear waterproofing membrane on top of that.

I was already gone home by the time you posted in this thread.

It is 90% complete. This bar is part of the kitchen so I am waiting until it's finished before I post pics.

It will be finished by this weekend though since I have friends visiting for Christmas.

I would add option 4 and go with butcher block in either maple or oak. Maple is harder though so go with that. It's about $17 a square foot at Lowes. It looks awesome and will look MUCH better than regular old tile.

I have my penis. That is my only true friend, even though I beat him all the time he still sticks around.

Here's what I had completed on Friday.

Note: The background is blocked out so that I don't ruin the suprise of before/after pics of the kitchen, which I will hopefully post this week.

Since these pictures I have sanded, filled, painted and laid tile.
I need to grout, add trim and another top coat and it will be complete.

why have plumbers ass when I can show it all off by not wearing pants?

damn saw dust doesn't feel so good though.

I am finishing this kitchen then building myself a platform bed then calling it quits for a while. I am worn out.

I feel your pain having to work on your recent house purchase.

Sawdust ass seems quite uncomfortable!

Looking forward to said pic of the single bed beings it stays empty :rainbow:

heehee

Gosh, seems like we will never finish with the little tid bit things. House is very nice but was vacant for 5 years so its minor things here and there. And to add to that, all the moving and unpacking and trying to settle in. I can't stand to have things unorganized, so I am unpacking as I get the boxes in and still trying to hang pictures and do the little things that make the house more cozy and welcoming to guests.

i love building things. between getting ready for the holidays, i'm refinishing a chest of drawers and painting a new addition on my house.
