Broccoli on Keto diets...

It's really low in Net carbs. Example: Say your portion of brocolli has 10 carbs, but 7 is fiber. So you only count the 3.

I can eat Brocolli every night with Chicken and stay in Ketosis.

same here a good size bag has like 30 grams of carbs..

just dont eat too much in one sitting, you'll be fine

Brocolli is low on carbs, but tough on the thyroid (as well as cabbage and califlower) - SOOOO if you have any thyroid issues, you might want to avoid it.

Low-carb diets can sometimes be tough on the thyroid too, which is where the carb load comes in.

Easiest way to check is to take your temperature a couple of times a day, and average it out and compare it to normal. If you come out kinda cold, brocolli may not be for you.

I understand that eating all three cooked is preferable (thyroidwise) to raw.

I've never heard this about broccoli before, and as someone who a) consumes a lot of the stuff, and b) is borderline hypothyroid, it kind of worries me. How exactly is broccoli hard on the thyroid?

i was waiting for The Broccoli Queen Ceebs to chime in on this one...lol...just kidding....

Heh, I guess I have kind of championed the broc... ;)

I have a lot of food allergies, and am very limited in my diet because of them. When I don't eat right, there are immediate consequences which have been bad enough for me to go to the ER a couple of times. Broccoli is something that doesn't tear up my body, has a lot of health benefits, and also happens to taste great steamed. Good stuff.

Certain plants contain goitrogens - which are substances that bind with iodine in the body, causing a false deficiency. After looking further into this, I find that cooking will destroy them and then the plants are safe to eat. Here's some info:

http://www.ithyroid.com/goitrogens.htm
http://www.csa.com/hottopics/thyroid/oview.html

These plants are members of the "brassica" family and include brocolli, cabbage, kale, and rapeseed (canola).

Since brocolli & cabbage are often eaten raw, just thought I would mention it. So, those with hypothyroid issues (or just symptoms) might want to avoid eating these foods uncooked, and avoid eating canola oil altogether. (They have found that coconut oil - saturated and all - is preferable for those with hypothyroid symptoms.)

Apparently, eating them cooked is not a problem.

Interesting, I had never heard this about brocolli. Definately will make me think twice about eating it often....

fawnmarie - my body temp has always been a tad below normal, do you think that is an indicator that I am a bit hyopthyroid? I've always felt like I am....
