I've got some money to throw around, around $500.. was thinking about 1,000,000 karma hits but was instead wondering if you had any stock tips..

looking for something that moves.. $10 per share or less...

not SIRI, already have that.

why $10 per share or less? you are smart enough to know that share price is not an indicator of volatility. The only reason share price should ever come into consideration is if the shares are under $5 (and thereby not subject to short trades, which actually does affect liquidity) or penny stocks which obviously we want nothing to do with. You should focus on market capitalization (share price x shares outstanding), not solely share price.

a company with 1,000 shares outstanding and a $500 per share stock price is worth $500,000

a company with 100,000 shares outstanding and a $5/share stock price is also worth $500,000

same thing. so now that we've established share price should never come into the equation when purchasing, can we expand the realm of investing possibilities? or do you still only want $10 and less stocks so you can have the illusion that more shares = more value?

let me know!

But you know that's all in your mind right?

Whether you buy 10 shares for $50 each or 50 shares for $10 each, a 10% move up will still net you $50 in profit.

The only shares under $10 that MOVE that I follow are TIVO and TASR

I have another play under $10 but it doesn't move and it won't move for at least another 6 months. It's a REIT called La Quinta Inns. I told sawastea about it.

La Quinta Corp. (LQI) - This is one of my favorites. It's a Texas based hotel operator, got into bad trouble in '98 when it was purchased by a Health Care REIT called Meditrust, which was using it's own stock for collateral on loans in a dangerous way.

So when the stock went down, the lenders called their loans, and they had to eliminate their dividend. Shareholders voted everyone out, new CEO Francis Cash was put in, 25 years of experience at Host Marriot and Red Roof Inns. They restructured, sold assets, paid down debt, right?

So they net $150 million CF now, operating on all cylinders, but they still aren't paying a dividend! Why? Because the restructuring left them with $250 million in tax loss carry forwards. What happens to REIT's that don't pay dividends? They go in the toilet, nobody wants them.

So it's trading at $9.30 right now, and the book value is $8.25. Starting in Q1 '06 they should show a profit, and will start paying a dividend again.

At that point the value of the stock will rise back to historic levels, it should not be selling for book value it's a great chain and now has great management but like I said nobody wants a REIT that doesn't pay a dividend. It should be worth at least $12.50/share next year and will pay out approximately a 5% dividend on that $12.50/share price, which would be an effective yield of ~7% on the price today, as operations and cash flow continue to improve I believe our effective yield in as little as 3 years from now could be 10% on the dividend, along with a 35% increase in the price of the shares this one is a home run.

La Quinta Corporation (LQI) and its controlled subsidiary, La Quinta Properties, Inc., is one of the largest owner/operators of limited-service hotels in the United States. Based in Dallas, Texas, the Company owns, operates or franchises more than 590 hotels in 39 states under the La Quinta Inns(R), La Quinta Inn & Suites(R), Baymont Inn & Suites(R), Woodfield Suites(R) and Budgetel(R) brands. For reservations or more information about La Quinta Corporation, please visit http://www.LQ.com .

But you want stocks that will move today... they have to be under $10?

Bran is right on.

Brian, what's the fascination with under $10? There are a few decent stocks at under $10, some of which can rebound from the late 90's and some of which are stuck forever in eternal damn-nation.

ok so the price isn't THAT big od a deal, more of a psychological thing. I'd like to be able to pick up 50-100 shares.. instead of 10-20
