Does anyone use a false(thumbless) grip? From what i've seen/read i don't believe so, seeing as how it would be hard to rip the bar apart as they suggest.
I do (nearing 500lbs) and i know a near 600lb bencher who goes open grip as well we dont' have any problem with it... I have thought of changing quite a few times for safety as genarr points out... but really at this point it is hard to change...
I would advise using the regular grip so as not to get so accustomed to open as he and I are - then it becomes very hard to switch, even if you want to...

ive been using a false grip for like 3-4 years now and i just recently tried to use a full grip. My left wrist still hurts from trying it, that was 2 weeks ago.
One of the guys that trains with us uses a false grip, and seems to like it better...I'd be too worried about dumping. I think it's personal preference.
Scott Mendelson used the thumbless grip till he dropped some monstrous weight on his chest, he went on of course to be the best of all time with due respect to Gene Rychlak. The danger factor is big. I dropped 250 on my chest between attempts in a meet and let me tell you it was a bitch and gets in your head big time and that was with my thumbs wrapped around the bar. Lots of guys use the "suicide" grip and it is a matter of personal preference. I really doubt that even those guys would actually recommend it.
