boxing and cycles

I just started boxing 2 days ago at a local gym downtown. I had taken a cycle back in september. My trainers said I defintitely had good size to me and they were going to knock it down some and make me leaner. I told them I was planning on adding some more size and they said no, that the muscle would slow me down. I am 5'8 at 174lbs and was planning on taking another cycle around mid jan. Does he know what he is talking about the muscle slowing me down or what???

Old school trainer's think that muscles slow you down. As long as you strength train and stretch, you'll be alright. The thinking is that...say with biceps....if you do curls and develop good bicep size then you can't fully extend your arm to get good reach and snap on your punches, or that your shoulders will get tired quicker trying to hold up big arms. Alot of boxers today have find crosstraining benificial. But, at 5'8" and 174 lbs., why wouldn't you try to drop to a lighter weight class?

Muscle can slow you down to some extent, but as long as you train properly and don't try to slap on 30 lbs in the next 2 months, you will be fine.

thanks for the imput. hvyweight, i dont really want to drop weight too much because i like being bigger, than being smaller but cut. I want to have as much muscle as possible to not look "dumb". cut is great, but I want to keep the size too.
