Box Squats

During football season in high school I remmeber coach made us do Box Squats instead of squats for explosion. What are other benefits of them, becasue to be honest when i do regular squats i sometimes feel too much strain on my back. I also do Hype ext for lower back.. but thught it would e fun to reminice with box squats again. What are advantages of box squats?
 
increased absoulute strength. and maily starting strength and reversal strength. thats what the box does, makes you have to come to a complete stop and the reverse the weight. also a box allows you to know exactly how far your squatting on every rep. and you can learn proper form on a bench eaiser than free squating.

Form - Teaches you to sit back and squat with you ass/hams instead of quads and knees

Breaks up concentric and eccentric motion

Requires starting strength (explosiveness-see above)

Gives you a feel for where parallel is and assures you hit at least that everytime.

Functions as a learning tool to find your weak link, so you know what other work to do.

Yeah i was using them today to teach a lad to squat. He's never done squats before, and i was trying to teach him to just sit, like you would normally. He couldn't quite understand what i was talking about, then he just sat down on another bench with perfect box squat form, i grabbed him and showed him exactly how he had done it right, shins upright butt back etc. Seems like a lot of people squat better if they are not thinking about it
 
thanks for the quick response. So you think if strength is my main concern since i feel a little weak in squats i should go back to doing box squats? i also do hacksled squats
