Bodybuilding vs. powerlifting?

JKurz1

Why do you feel that bodybuilders have so much more muscle mass than powerlifters even, in mose cases, powerlifters being much stronger? Save the high hormonal use, is it the shorter rest periods, couple with the higher reps, leading to more gh production?

This has always baffeled me........sorry if its ignorant but I guess I just don't know the answer and have hard many differnt stories.......

Stop right there. Top bodybuilders are enormous but have you seen the top powerlifters or weightlifters (in the heavy or superheavy classes, to match the top BB'rs weights)? That's a more accurate comparison. They are carrying a lot more fat, but under that fat, they're thickly muscled. Check out the Bolton 1003 DL video, and look at the size of the guys who come on the platform after the lift. They're all about 50x more beefier than your average gym rat.

That said, fatigue/metabolic work builds sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which looks good but doesn't seem to have much use for powerlifting. Powerlifters don't seem to spend much time working high rep stuff.

A more interesting comparison would be the typical 18 y.o. following bodybuilding routines vs. that same kid pursuing powerlifting routines . . . it'd be interesting to see who's put on more muscle after 3 years.

Yeah..

But i would consider myself a powerlifter....just one that knows how to diet...

I bet eventually ill be 220lbs @ sub 10% BF, Its just alot easier to eat dirty meals to get the calories in for muscle growth....

I do agree that once you start getting too big theres the next ? " Whats the point"? Anyone can get hughe by eating massive, but it isnt too healthy....

but the things that BB do aint too healthy either....

powerlifters have mroe muscle amss than bodybuilders in general or I guess you could say at the elite level and it has to do with the amount of food consumed. They did a study with BB, PL's and sumo wrestler and while the sumo wrestlers did actually a veyr little amount of physical activity they ate tons of food and in turn had by far the most lean muscle of the bunch. There is one specific powerlifter (ill go look for the link) that diets down and is straight huge and ripped under the fat.

If you're talking IFBB pros....you've got to look at drugs and ancillaries in massive doses....sorry if anybody takes offense, but if you don't accept this, you're either naive or looking to pick a fight. SHW powerlifters a tthe elite level sport just as much lean muscle as most IFBB pros, albeit it they have much higher bodyfat.

I agree with Proto, the more accurate comparison between Bb and Pl methods are younger lifters, and people who are either natural or simply using modest doses of anabolics. The ones who train as "bodybuilders" tend to carry much less muscle, wonder why they can't put on size, get frustrated with training, etc etc.

genetics, drugs, more rep work

you can't make generalizations.. yes of course some plers look like shit, have stick legs, neck rolls and big bench bellys but some look like hairier bodybuilders. Just like some bodybuilders are a buck 70 and struggle to get any bigger.

To each there own but like you said............genetics plays a huge role when your looking at the worlds best in any sport.

I don't know. She is wearing an Iron Trybe T-Shirt. My understanding is a lot of them walked and went there. I think I maybe talked to Spatts a few times but I never saw a pic or knew much about her. Your guess would be a lot better than mine.

You happen to know whatever happened to Arioch either?

I'm always impressed how many young guys go into PL'ing and do relatively well, make solid gains, and generally have pretty impressive results, even though they've just started out.

it's funny you should mention this... back when i first joine EF, i used to spend a lot of time reading the anabolic board. guys there would have you believe that the general publics idea that AAS is a shortcut was BS - joe schmoe didn't know the amount of effort most of them took to develop "good physiques"... they all trained "balls to the wall" or so they claimed - if it required so much effort then why o why were they using AAS at bodyweights of under 2 bucks?!

sorry i just had to rant :)

anyway, if you take a look at some of the lighter PLers or oly lifters, and compared them to bodybuilders, it sure looks like they have less muscle. it may be true, but strength isn't only about the muscle. that is just one aspect - there are many other variables that come in to play.

having said that, some of the biggest strongmen (actually they are all big!), PLers and oly lifters have a very large amount of lean muscle - some have it under a layer of fat and some don't. amongst strongmen, the best examples of guys that look pretty ripped despite strength being their focus: pudzianowski (obviously) and manfred hoeberl. manfred had the biggest gunzz in the world long before valentino made his arms swell up to 29" with pus  and he was not doing it with synthol either.

I think it was Magnus Samuelsson who said, "Some people train to look pretty. I just train so I can be the strongest man there is. And then again... I'm already pretty.".

i AM BEGINNIN TO THINK YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON THIS DUDE....EZ BRO...
lol, but seriously, that guy captured the imagination of almost (probably all) strength sport enthusiasts with his comic like size and strength.

i think you are going to see a shift in the powerlifting world. the old days of seeing guys that appear to be fat and overweight is starting to go by the way side. there is a whole new breed of powerlifting that are strong as hell, and look as though they could compete in a BB show. See a guy like Matthew Kroczaleski. He is the WPO middleweight champ. This guy squats 925, benches 615, deadlifts 733 and looks like a BBer. you are going to start to see a shift in the way PLer's look, maybe not so much in the upperweight class (275 and up) but most of your guys in the 242 and below don't have that traditional PLer look

Yep, that is Spatts and they are at Eagle Gym in St. Louis, Mo.

Diet is the biggest difference, despite all of the trainig differences a well. A lot of people mistake me for a bodybuilder.

wow the before pic towards the bottom looks 10x better than 99% of guys on EF :coffee:

oh well, i stand corrected about manfred then. well, at least his arms weren't swollen to 25" with 5" of pus :coffee:

those two pictures were taken 19 days apart (look at the date on the....10Jul06 and 29Jul06)
