Blown biceps tendon

I was at a health and lifting clinic during the weekend. It was
sponsored by AST. Many of the AST sponsored lifters were
there. They were having a deadlifting contest so I just had to
get into it. I was thinking to myself that I was going to kick ass
on these body builders. And had I stayed together I would have.

I warmed up and then picked a nice easy opening weight of
495. Started the pull and what the hell. My darn biceps tendon
twisted and stretched. I dropped the weight and looked at my
bicep and it was in serious spasm. One of the spectators told
me that she looked at my twitching bicep and then had to turn
around and look at the wall to keep from getting sick.

Looking back on it, I think I know why it happened. I usually
pull with the bar more in my fingers and I use chalk. The AST
bars were larger diameter with cutouts for grip. In addition, I
used a gripper. These two factors caused me to position the
bar more in my palm. This I think caused my forearm muscle
to fire, which in turn caused my bicep to fire.

When I go back next year, I will bring my own DL'ing bar and
some chalk.

Today, my whole bicep is purple and swollen. It looks nasty.

I will try to find a good doctor and setup an appointment. Sure
hope I do not need surgery but the way it looks I may be shit
out of luck.

Damn, Geno_O. Get that thing taken care of. I hope it's just a minor tear and a little time off will help it to heal. Good luck!

Damn dude , thats terrible. Go get it looke at and keep it iced. And i was gonna be there in a few days. Oh well , we can still meet up.
Good luck and getit checked! Later

The power of ice is awesome. Keep it iced down and take anti's. Is it bruised? If there is any i would get it checked. To me a bruise means its now seriuos. You then will have gone from hurt to Fucked Up!

Get it checked. If there is a tear, even a partial one, it can re-attached in the wrong manner, both in position and alignment. If surgery is indicated, do not put it off. Wish I could give you some good news, but all I can say is that the surgery is pretty easy, as these things go.

Geno_O,

did you use an alternating grip, one hand under the bar and one over the bar?

was the arm that had the bicept injury the same arm that you used a underhand grip?

You might want to surf the web for medical sites dealing with bicept tears.
Good luck

I went to the doctor today. To quote PLJay, I am "fucked up".
I blew the tendon off of the bone. The doctor determined this
without an MRI. He blew his off seven years back and never
had it repaired. He said that he has lost little strength.

The doctor did schedule me for an MRI tomorrow. Then it is
back to his office with the film to determine what to do. This
is where I need input. Should I have the surgery?

Jagermeister, my hand was turned under.

Geno_O,

the doctor said that he never got his repaired?
If it was blown completely of the bone, then the bicept would be in a ball at the top of the arm, and he would be unable to lift his arm?
maybe im just confused?

about that grip, their is allot of bicept injuries to the arm with an underhand grip. I would strongly advise you to not deadlift with an alternate grip, but use a hook grip instead.

it is much safer, and there is no risk of injury

Jagermeister, I am confused also as I always thought the bicep
would end up on the shoulder if it blew at the elbow. But he
had me do a test. I put my finger on my left arm in the middle,
front of the elbow and then curled my arm up. I could fell this
big thick tendon. He had me do this on the right, the injured
arm, and no tendon. It is gone.

When I did the injury, there was a big lump in the left, center
of my bicep. It has since disappeared. Do not know if this was
a spasm or the tendon.

My doctor said that he has only lost strength in one direction.
The way I understood it is that strength is reduced when rolling
the hand open, much as when one uses a screw driver.

If I have the repair, I will be too afraid to turn my hand under
again. Will probably try to learn to pull with both hands turned
down.
