Blood tests says I have kidney problem

The nurse called me today says that my kidney analysis says something to worry about. Wants me to come back in...she also asked me if I did steroids...of course I said no...then she asks if I did Creatine..of course I said Yes and she said that could be it....but really I dont do creatine...so could it be the test?

In the last 4 months I have done Test @ 800mgs a week...which i finished about 3 weeks ago and about 5 months ago I finished some accutane which I did for 4 months at about 80mgs a day. Which of these do you thing caused the problem with the kidneys...I dont really know what the problem is or how serious it is until I go back on Monday...but should I admit steroid use to her? I dont have a problem admitting it, but if its not the cause...then I dont want to.

It probably was the accutane but I've been done with that for 5 months

any advice?

good news is I'm STD free...unfortuantly i didnt have my testosterone levels checked

hard to say without knowing your labs.

How much protein do you consume? If creatine was a question it is an indicator of too much protein in your diet and a lot of red meat will cause this problem too. If they do a CT scan in the future you may find that you have kidney stones. I wish ya the best.

I would need to see the actual numbers.

Part of the renal profile (kidneys) is a U/E (urea and electrolytes or BUN - blood urea nitrogen in the US), sodium and potassium.

Urea is a by-product from the breakdown of protein and is elevated in a high protein diet, or when you are slightly dehydrated.

Creatinine is also a part of the U/E. Creatinine is the breakdown product of creatine, the energy transfer molecule in muscle (it recharges ATP). The more muscle you have, the higher your creatinine.

Creatine does not cause any renal damage unless you had a pre-existing renal condition.

You really only have to be concerned about sodium and potassium being out of the reference range.

A renal profile may also contain a bicarb, or CO2.

I would assume they are calling you back in as your creatinine and urea are elevated, which would be 'normal' physiologically for bodybuilders.

I have bloods done all the time and my urea and creatinine are often elevated.

Doctors are often quite rubbish at interpreting results within the context of the patient, the nurse is probably looking at the numbers and not considering the things I mentioned.

She is also not up to date with any of the recent literature, I will state this again, a high protein diet and creatine supplementation do NOT do any damage to the kidneys unless you already had some sort of kidney problem.

HUH???

No I'm kidding...most of that makes sense...but Tatyana...how do you decide if the urea and creatinine being elevated is actually a result of the high protein diet or its a preexisting condition? I actually dont take any Creatine supplementation....

Thanks for the help

There are other markers like the potassium will be elevated, and it will depend on how much your urea and creatinine are elevated.

Your bicarb will be lower as well.

Interpreting labs is more like a pattern, there are very few single things you can say, oh that is a bit high or a bit low, that means you have X.

I wouldn't worry too much, I will bet you that the surgery phones up most people with any parameters slightly out of the ordinary.

I am not sure if I was clear on the creatinine thing.

More muscle = MORE creatinine.

It is NORMAL to have more creatinine when you are a bodybuilder and it has nothing to do with creatine supplementation.

DON'T worry until you get the actual results.

You may even find out that the nurse has no bloody idea what she is talking about.

Tatyana...thats for the advice...
I'm sure that once I see them again on Monday they will give me a copy of the actual results. I'll try to scan them and post them to see if anyone see anything to worry about.

The more the muscle meaning more creatinine makes sense. I do know my experience in the ER and the doctor saying he had never seen creatinine levels so high in his life made him ask how much red meat I was eating. I was eating 2.5 or more pounds per day which was probably dumb on my part.
