A truly great battle movie. I felt like I was there and that was not always very pleasant.

What really struck me was the homophobic guy I had to sit beside because the theatre was so damned crowded. He about leaned out of his seat the entire movie so people would know he wasn't sitting with me. No...I don't suffer from B.O.

Homophobes annoy the dogshit out of me. Seems so childish. There was nowhere else to sit. Sitting next to a stanger at a theatre isn't unknown.

Back to the movie. It is long and quite realistic. It will do very well. It was touching but not of the Saving Private Ryan caliber. Hard to compare Somalia to WW II. It all became a disaster because one guy basically fell out of the helicopter and then 19 guys died mostly trying to save each other. Total screw up as war so often is.

It is very pro military which I personally like because the military protects me from tyranny and oppression from despots like Stalin. Again...the boys in Washington were portrayed to not be military geniuses. Why does that sound so familiar???
 
Downloaded it last week off Morpheus. I will never sit in a fregging theater again. Too many homo's...JK ...but I am done with theaters...thank you Morpheus and DSL.

I have heard from several vets that were there. Somalia almost turned in to a goat fuck.

For instance the commanders ordered some of the special forces to only wear half their body armor. They felt the troops would move faster without the back protectors and the guys were told not to wear the protective gear for their backs.

Problem was, anyone who took a round in the back essentially got shot at least twice, due to the rounds bouncing off the inside of the chest armor.

Goes to show you what happens when politicians try and fight wars.

Leno last night was talking about a movie or something about Monica Lewinsky and the pres.....he said it was going to be called
"Black Pants Down".....:p
 
Well we got in and were 30 minutes early, we had 5 people and we had to split into 2 groups to get seated. Overall, the movie was decent, but again if you had read the book, you may be dissapointed. Seems to me they left a lot of stuff out. I will say one thing tho... it wasn't gorey but it was tense the whole freaking time... they did a good hob on that... i highly reccomend that you watch the movie and then read the book. I won't ruin the movie by telling my favorite part (since some haven't seen it). I would have named that mission... clusterfuck.
 
Ok guys you convinced me I'll go on monday. SOunds like a good movie, just hope it isnt another crappy Pearl Harbor.....
 
Manny a lot of it is taken from what they have recorded when they were over there... actual radio transmissions and videotape... seriously it's very documentary like. Like I said before it's not the best war movie of all time but I don't want my $8 back either... it was so tense that i totally was shocked when it ended and it had been over 2 hours...
 
when i was in the special forces q-course, there was a guy in my class who was in the battle. in the book, something happened (very memorable in a fucked up way) that was in reference to him. i haven't seen the flick yet, but am curious as to whether they'll include the event.

for the guy who said that the mission fucked up b/c someone fell fromthe helo, keep in mind that, on this particular day, the mission was going to be a goat-fuck no matter what. this wasn't known till after the fact, though. there's alot that i imagine the movie couldn't include about the battle itself, and how it came to be.
 
Well my drill sargent has said some interesting things about that situation though he hasn't mentioned seeing the movie yet...some of his ranger buddies didn't make it back from that and some of his green beret teammates were there

when I was in Ranger Regiment I met a lot of guys who were survivors.....very intersting...
 
I just seen it. It was good, and Josh Hartnett surprised me. It wasn't lovey dovery like Pearl Harbor.

Anyone that knows: Why were the flags backwards on their uniforms?

The mission fucked from the first ranger fast roping.

Wont comment but some of my members under me, did trained with some of the guys over there.

What a powerful movie! Especially the ending ,when the cargo plane's hatch closes. Who ever sent those brave solidiers into that mission with humvees instead of armored personel carriers and the PROPER air support they needed should be stripped of their citizenship! Those brave men went into the pits of hell itself and lived to tell about it, except of course for the 19 heroes who were lost.

True, but it really boiled down to that fat fuck Les Aspen and his refusal to authorize the use of armored vehicles to join the raid. Drop in with Delta team members and have armored carriers arrive to extract. Mr. ASSpen outright refused stating there would be no need and that these guys could walk out if needed. Even as the firefight was being listened to, many Senior Officers were begging for armored vehicles to roll and Mr. Aspen again said no. It took a bribe to get NATO armored carriers hours after they were needed. A fucking bribe to NATO.

Mr. Aspen was allowed to resign and bow out....

That son of a bitch Les Aspen died a much easier death by having a massive heart attack then those brave soldiers who were much better men than Aspen. As far as I'm concerned. Les Aspen murdered 19 people. Having Les Aspen as the Secretary of Defense made as much sense as having a Satanist as the pope!
 
I don't like war movies, not that I stick my head in the sand about reality, but having all of that inhumanity put in my face just hurts too much....

I saw the flick with my friends yesterday evening and I still can't speak about it.... to see such inhumanity. I can't form an intelligent thought, I just can't.

Well, Congress did impeach the repsonsible party. But it wasn't for that.

The "logic" behind the decision was that sending armor would present the wrong image to the surrounding nations.

I have not seen the movie yet, but American soldiers that deploy wear an American flag on their sleeves. IS this what you are talking about?

Matt, yeah but the flags were backwards. I was wondering why that was.
 
That is actually the way they always are. Even soldiers deploying to places like Kosovo have them backwards.

I don't know why....

Actually over 1000 people died in that battle. I like to give foreigners credit for being people. Seems that many countries have very corrupt and inhumane leadership.
 
Going to see it for free next week with my Marine bro's. We will never leave a Marine behind, dead or alive, period. And it is the same way with the Army I would suspect.

PAYBACK TIME! MARINES FOR SYRIA AND 241 DEAD. ARMY FOR SOMOLIA AND 18 DEAD.

Can't wait for my reenlistment to go through at end of Feb. I am gonna do my damdest to get to scout/sniper school and then to the middle east!
 
I just got home from seeing it. I remember I was shaking angry when the raid started to go wrong and our guys started getting hurt.

My thoughts

I can speak with a little bit of experience. I was in 2nd Ranger Bn., Ft. Lewis Wa. from 91-97 ( Cco. 2/75 RGR REGT). For the flag question the flag is worn on the sleeve as if the flag were flying in the direction of movement if that makes sense.
it's a terrible thing when even one american life is lost. but not all was a failure. As far as stats the Somalis lost about 500 people during that fire fight compared to our 18-19. Over the next 48 hours nearly 1100 wounded Somalis were being treated for wounds by Red Cross. That damage done to the enemy was caused by only about 150 men with limited air assets. Not trying to glorify it but under the circumstances the men on the ground did an outstanding job.
Some people wonder why so many men made such a deal about going after people that were already dead. All fighting units have codes they live by and the 75th Ranger Regt. is no exception. For the Rangers that have served in the Ranger Regiment theirs if the Ranger Creed and they can recite it by heart.

R ecognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endevor to uphold the prestinge, honor, and high esprit de corps of my Ranger Regiment.
A cknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite solider who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by Land, Sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster, and fight harder than any other soldier.
N ever shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the tasks whatever it may be, one hundred percent and then some.
G allantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
E nergetically will I meet the enemies of my country, I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I eve embarrass my country.
R eadily will I display the intestinal fortitude required on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission, though I be the lone survivor.

I've was privileged to have served in the 75th RGR REGT. That job aloud me work alongside men in other spec ops units from other branches of service. I can honestly say that it will probably be the most professional group of people I will ever be associated with. Whether they are Navy SEALS, Army Rangers etc., you know you are dealing with the cream of the crop. It's not to common in the civilian world where you can find a guy who's playing with his children in the front yard one day and possibly be in a foreign country in harms way the next.
If theres one thing to remember is that as long as we remeber and pay respects to all who have given the ultimate sacrafice then they will never have died in vain. That's what i believe.

It has a bunch of cool audio and video clips as well as interviews with the people who were actually there and some pictures as well. Pretty cool.

The guy who wrote the book, Mark Bowden, first wrote a series of articles in the Philadelpha Inquirer. He then went on to write the book. I have some friends who read the book, and they said it's exactly like the articles (almost word for word), only longer and a few added parts.
 
As someone in Army Basic training, and someone scheduled for AIrborne in 6 months I volunteered for RIP and hope that one day I will earn the honor of wearing the Tab

I can't wait till I can go see it at the theatre

The Ranger Tab is a quailification and The Ranger scroll is a way of life. You ask any Ranger that actually has a tab and served in the Ranger Regt. and he will agree.

I do agree. I also know that when I attended Ranger school I was not in the 75th yet. I watched how the RI's treat the "bat boys", and those guys often get by with questionable leadership/patrolling.

Also, Ranger Regt. has some other advantages:

1. rarely deals with budget issues - funding is pretty much always there.

2. Do not have to deal with problem soldiers like a regular unit does. If a guy is a problem, they just "turn in their black PTs and report elsewhere (generally Korea).

3. Officers are hand selected and have already served in the position they will be doing at Ranger aRegiment.


Having said all that, I loved Ranger Regiment, and it is the home of thebest soldiers in the Army.

Very few people ever get to experience the type of live-fire training that Rangers do. Budgets are of little concern. What was your thoughts on the giving the army blacke berets. I'm glad they changed the color. Bottom line is that thoses boys are professionals and can do their jobe reguardless of what they where. Nothing like seeing a fat female soldier on a soft shoe profile taking 10 minutes to fix her pizza pie hat:mad: Deep down they just want to be Rangerettes anyways. Nothing like a bunch of chicks that want to "F" you because you jump out of airplanes LOL. Just like a rock band having groupies :fro:

It was the best training there is. Live fires...night live fires....

Like most Rangers, I hate the idea of black beretes. I have been out for a little over two years now. I went to the airport once and they had National Guard doing security. I saw this guy in a black beret outside the terminal and I was like "Hey...Ranger..." until I realized that everyone had those berets now.

There was a time when you would see another black beret across the street on post and respect it. (Except for the RTB guys at Ft Benning..ha ha)

I'd have rather seen the rest of the Army go to tan berets...but oh well...Rangers are the best even if they were wearing Halloween costumes.

That's the sound of my coin hitting the tabble LOL. But this coin was from the Regt. Commander so I only pull it out once in a while.
I have to say that one of the best moments of my tim in the Bat. was when my platoon got to go to France for the 50th anniv. of D-Day. I was privileged enough to stand on Pointe Du Hoc for the wreath laying ceremony. I was part of the cordon and two Squad leaders from my plt. set the wreath w/the president.
I never realized how proud i was and what a responsibility it is to be an American than during my week of being in France during that time. Those vets that I met are indeed the real American badasses. Americans left a lasting impression forever on D-day.
In fact I met a lot of "French Baby Boomers" who had American names. Apparently alot of Rangers intermingled with the local women LOL. I even met a 70 yr. old women who had a pic. of a wedding dress she made out of one of the parachutes from the supply drops. Even met Bruce Jenner's father. He was also a Ranger who hit the beaches during D-day. Patriotism hit deep during that time. Specially when a good friend re-enlisted on Point Du Hoc with Gen. Wayne A. Downing. (The WAD) and Gen. Sullivan. That got me and I came home to re-enlist a short time later.
I'm sure everyone has good memories also. And I might be straying off the original intent of this thread, but at might give civillian types a litte bettter understanding of the "Ranger Mentality". People should realize it's a little more than "Live of life of sex and danger". Then again what's wrong with that LOL.
Aw what I wouldn't give to go to another Ranger Rendezvous in Ft. Benning where Rangerettes come from all over to "support their troops" LOL. I guarante that if there ever was some type of elite women's unit I'd be the first groupie they had trying to get some. LOL:D
