Big Benching!!!

OK,I'm still traumatized from watching this, yesterday we did chest in the gym,I'm reppin with my normal 275 for 5 and so on,in walks a guy same size as me about 6'0" 230lbs,he loads 315 for a warm up,hits 405 for 8,465 for 6,and I mean he's doin this easily,so for a gym spectacular he has his partner load up the bar with 565 hits it for two,the crowd goes wild!!!My question to him was HOW?He wouldn't tell me anything, except that he wasn't on roids,is there a trick to putting up that much weight or even close to that?Or are some people motivated by an inner force that knows no boundries,or does it just take years of practice?I put up 315 once and I have to struggle,or could it be he's lying and he's doing a boat load of something that makes him that strong?I would love to be that strong one of these days.

Perhaps he trains for strength instead of size, though his pyramding makes me think otherwise

PLer ?
Bench chest ?
Needle in the ass ? ;)

could be the dude is motivated to hit big numbers.... could be juice...

who knows.... either you are driven to put up the big numbers or you are not.

i think hes an ass..i dont care who you are 315 for your first set???? that is totally fuckin stupid..with that aside maybe he was just born to bench..if you want to put up big numbers you have to train for strength

For a long time I thought it was because I had long arms was the reason for not so high benching, but this guy had just as long arms as me,there goes that excuse.I heard from a few people today though that he is on the gear. And rojas are you saying you bench more than that?

Years of training!

I agree. Id say thats the main ingredient. Some people will have an advantage and they will get there faster, but that doesnt mean you cant reach that level if you work hard enough. Ive been told Id never break 300lbs on bench unless I did negatives all the time, Ive also been told that I should give up trying to be a strong bencher cuz my arms are too long, but I still progress. Slower then some, but it all adds up. I dont focus on any excuses, just give it all I can, and try to learn what I can to make increases. I couldnt bench the bar when I started and am now approaching 9X my original strength in 9 1/2 years of training. Benching was never natural to me. Other factors always help though, but ultimately its the drive and determination that will determine how far you take it. I also still bench pretty flat backed. Bodybuilder style. I might be able to make increases if I changed it, but I havent yet. My training partner does more of a full body bench press. Hes definately more of a natural bencher then me. He wasnt even benching 315 without assistance a little over 2 years ago. Since hes been training with me hes now hit 365 for 9 and 425 for a single at 185lbs. I was stronger then him when we started, and we trained very similiar on the bench for that time period. This shows how much body structure can make a difference. Im bigger then he is, and a good deal stronger on everything else aside from the flat bench. Im not a bench specialist at all either, I train EVERYTHING else, and hard. He might train twice a week if that. His focus is the bench. He has his ass off the bench and uses the belt, as tight as possible. Two things I dont do either. Still impressive though. Hes 5'7 and Im 5'8 I estimate. He might even be 5'6. Hard to say. His arms are a good deal shorter then mine though. Sometimes you have to make up more for the limitations.

OK somethings wrong here, just got back from the gym where I watched the same guy just pull 705lbs off the floor 3 times in deads.I am so traumatized now I think I'll need professional help,LOL!!This guy is a true monster.I asked him why he wasn't a champion powerlifter and he said he just does this for fun,Ha Ha Ha !!

lol.

I could see myself saying and doing the same thing.

I can no where bench near the 565, but am slowly getting closer every year. About 3 years ago was the first time i ever tried benching 405. At the time, i had probably been training for about 6-7 years, maybe 3-4 serious. I had a lift off and everything, but my body wasnt ready for the extra weight. My shoulders, elbows, and wrists hurt, so i knew i wasnt ready for that much weight even though i could handle 355 or 365 (335 was my high at the time without getting a lift off). Now, i can do 405 for 5 sets of 5 (probably max around 475 or so, but not intending too) without a lift or any thing hurting. I could probably handle warming up with 225 with ease, but would rather throw around 135 for a few quick/easy reps. A big/strong bench comes with time and a TON of dedication. It also helps to constantly change things up, whether it be set, rep, or routine schemes.

get some video of this..raw or suited?

You should try to work out with him. His strength level will push you to get better.

And I wouldn't call it luck... he's probably been training his ass off for years.

Of course. But some guys have to bust ass and do roids just for a 300-400-500 total.

I'm not trying to marginalize this guy's hard work by any means. But realize that to put up his kind of numbers requires a genetic gift.

Ultimately the only person you should compare yourself to is you. If you're making progress you're a winner.

I'm going to bring my friends cam with me next bench and back day,and I'm going to snap some shots of this,to watch this guy is amazing,he lifts off with help of course, then he lowers the bar slowly and he seems to let the bar rest for a couple of seconds on his chest and then it's like an explosion, and he never lifts without his headphones on.As soon as I get pics I'm posting them.

that wasn't pyramiding... that was warming up.
i train for strength- thats what you do.
he's probably been training for years, training for strength only, has good genetics, and just cause he's not juicing NOW, doesn't mean he hasn't in the past.

He went 8x6x4x2. Seems like your standard pyramid too me?

Here's an update on the big benching cop,i brought the Digi camera today to snap some of this guy deadlifting,I pull the camera out as he's reppin with 605,he drops the weight and looks at me and says if i take a pic,he's gonna do one of two things, snap my neck or arrest me,I put the camera up.There's something fishy here.

nah not really. invasion of his privacy. most gyms wont allow cameras in them, just because someone ELSE may have a problem getting their picture taken. strange world we live in eh?

What a dick. What gym is it? I'll send a few of my UFC friends over to straighten him out. J/K they'd all get arrested anyways. But seriously, why does he care if you take a picture of him, did you ask him?

this is by far the best advice i have seen given here on this board. and if i could add to this, you cannot become what you are at awe of. admire feats that others do, but dont compare yourself to them.

If a guy said that to me I would snap the pic, then him. What a dick. Doubt it if it is true. I was traqining this NFL hopeful. He warmed up like this. A month in, he hurt his chest. I told him to warm up different but he thought he knew best....Nope, I was right.

no one finds this the least bit fishy?? i mean this guy should be competing if he isnt really already!!

maybe he should....but maybe he does it for his own personal satisfaction. he's probably one of those people that gets off on lifting heavy, and doesn't care much for doing it in a comp. or maybe he does compete.

dude just say "my buddies didn't believe me when I said you could deadlift 600... can I take a photo to prove it to them?" don't try to do it without permission!

He was strapped,I got an apology today,I told him why I wanted pics and he seemed flattered, said he was too paranoid about the force seeing pics,he's been accused of using gear and is under investigation,I think from now on I'll mind my own buisness, too deep for me.He wouldn't permit pics but said come on down anytime and watch.whoever is close.

hey man, thats cool though. you can actually go up and talk to him now. see what he does, how long he has been doing it etc. no more speculating on here. you can actually ask him! :)

maybe he'll have some tips or things that work well for him to pass on.
