Well, Optimum Nutrition's 5lb. canisters of whey protein, usually vanilla ice cream (80 servings, more is better, and it dissolves easily and tastes great) is, in my opinion, the best protein drink out there.
I remember Debaser saying he likes Pro Complex 55, due to the higher amount of protein per serving, and glutamine in each. I did some math, and found out you're much better off getting ~> http://www9.netrition.com/optimum_whey_page.html <~
THAT STUFF
WP = Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein
PC = Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex
Cost
WP - 28.95
PC - 43.95
Just assuming you followed the exact diet posted on the first page of the DC Training thread, you'd be consuming 5 shakes a day of PC. Now, with 55 grams of protein a serving for PC, you'd need exactly 2.5 of WP - which means you'd have to consume 12.5 servings of WP.
Now, look at the servings in PC. 28. Divide 28 by 5. You've got yourself 5.6. Assuming you were devouring the protein at such a rate as on DC's suggested diet plan, you would need to refill your protein stock every 5 and a half days, roughly.
However, vanilla ice cream has 80 servings. Divide 12.5 into that and you've got 6.4.
This means, roughly every 6 and a half days you replace your supply of WP. So you get an extra day before you have to buy once more, and spend $15 less!
As for Glutamine, don't worry. Each serving of WP, the Vanilla Ice Cream flavor, has 2443 mgs of Glutamine. PC has 5131 mgs per serving. But look, 2.5 servings of WP (which you need to equal the same protein content of PC) would be 2443 (mgs Glut) multiplied by 2.5 so...
6107.5 mgs glutamine every shake of WP equal to PC in protein content.
And then calories? No problem.
260 for every PC
110 for every WP
110 x 2.5 = 275
So, besides cost, WP (assuming equal protein content) wins in...
Calories
Glutamine (mgs)
Potassium
I just bothered to check the last one out of curiosity. The rest of the nutrients aren't so important. I figured I'd point out the big ones to people.
I was bored and stayed up all night, and this crossed my mind. I've noticed it for a long time, but wanted to do some math and actually compare the two. Maybe there's a better source of protein out there, but as of now this one tastes great, is cheap, is delivered to me in a day (considering Netrition.com's warehouse is in NY, and I live on LI), and is the best possible buy out there I've found yet!
