Best way to calculate bf%

While the % number is interesting and something you can track over time, don't get too hung up on the exact number, because it can vary from method to method and the tester's experience. Also, some methods are affected if you're dehydrated, holding water or recently eaten. The most accurate method would be autopsy. Barring that, there's MRI, underwater weighing, BodPod, and calipers (7 site w/ experienced tester). My last choice would be electrical impedence (like a Tanita scale) but even that's useful for monitoring whether fat is increasing or decreasing.

A non-technical way to see if you're carrying extra bodyfat is to jump up and down naked in front of the mirror. If anything jiggles and it's not a sex organ, it's fat.

Digital Weight Scales that Measure BF%

There's a place by my house (New Balance) that sells digital scales that are supposed to measure bf %. How well do they operate? Is it accurate? The scale is quite expensive (about 150 dollars Canadian) so I want to know how well they work before forking out the dough.

Thanks in advance,

Madhops

like fitfossil said scales use eletrical impedence this is not a very accurate method depending among others on your hydration at that moment.
Asuming perfect circumstances this method has a margin of error of +/- 5% if i remember correctly.

Although this doesnt sounds very good scales can be a good tool to keep track of your progress. Going from 15% to 10% on the scales doesnt mean your 10% but i gives a good indication that you have lost roughly 5% Bf

Underwater weighing is the most effective. Using electrical impedence allows for water weight to be measured as fat. Calipers allow for human error. Underwater weighing measures everything that sinks. The only thing that doesn't sink is fat, it floats. However, it is VERY important that you have NO air in your lungs, gas in your stomach, and are completely underwater.
