Best state in America to live in?

Austin Texas. South Padre Island is 4 hours away, Dallas is 3 hours, San Antonio is 1 hour, Houston is 3 hours. Texas is huge geographically and has a vast variety of outdoor activities and environments, as well as amusement parks and pro sports teams. As mentioned, you can carry a gun if it suits you and deer hunting is the best in North America.
Quality of living index for Austin is 2nd in nation next to San diego, but SD is in Cali and we dont want to live in Cali now do we? LOL. Austin has all the benefits of a southern city except it is distinctly more cosmopolitan than San Antonio, Dallas, or Houston. It is much more diverse and cultered due to its heavy tech sector and the huge influence of University of Texas. It is still a "southern city" however, with southern charm and hospitality.

South Padre's more like 8 hours. Austin is nice but it just doesn't have the comforts of a large city. For a small city, traffic is horrendous and I've been told during the tech boom it was even worse. Nightlife is great..Country-western, 6th and 4th street live music etc... The west hills are gorgeous and Lake Travis is a gem. More diverse than Houston or San Anton?.. I got to disagree with ya there. All and all it's a great little city lots to do and lots of fun but it's hotter than hell and humid. O'h and texans are the WORST drivers I have ever seen. I'm talking worse than Mass.

oregon yes, washington. no way, cost of living is almost as high as places in cali, dirty ocean, small towns, seattle is really dirty i think. and there are no good looking people here. seattle is the only city this state has. all the rest are gang lands etc. I guess seatle isn't too bad if you like rain and mold on everything, and homo's EVERYWERE!!!!!but washington itself is a shit hole. it's pretty, but that's about it. you feel like your in the woods all the time, you can see anything because they dont cut trees down. you have to know where eveything is before you go try to find the place because everything is hidden.

Other choices:

Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho.

With the exception of mountains, you pretty described Central Florida.

Be more specific. . not a pleasant place if you are an urban dweller.

Plenty of outdoor activities. . . plus good winters.

i was young for one. and i also really like to water ski and wakeboard. the only body of water closeby was the flaming gorge. it was really friggin cold. we lived in a pretty nice neighborhood and our neighbors were really neat people... but id rather live somewhere outside of denver, or even better yet colorado springs. that place rocks.

I would be happy in Nevada/Arizona/Wyoming/Montana/New Mexico(parts) or anywhere with white beaches and clear water far away from all the crap.

I don't know who has the better beaches, Wyoming or Montana.

Going by the cost of living, weather, things to do, ocean, forests, mountains, lakes, rivers. Nice clean cities/city etc. What would you say the best overall state is to live in?

I'm actually not sure by those standards as I haven't been into the middle states to judge.

I know that I need a big city life in order to love the place. Just by preference I would go with New York or California, specifically NYC and LA.

When I have kids though, I would want to live in a relatively expensive town. This would be for the simple reason of safety, good schools, and a nice environment to grow up in.
