best routine for mass besides madcow' 5x5?

beet me too it. I was gonna say HST. read and read about it first though, because as you will soon find, it actually allows for a lot more variation than madcows routine, though on the surface it may not appear so.

HST, German volume training, Dual-Factor Hypertrophy training, HIT, weiderism/old school, Reg Park/Steve Reeves training, Hardgainer (Stuart McRoberts) training . . .

That's what comes to mind initially. A google search on any one of these methods would get you started. From the above list, I would recommend the dual factor (5x5, DFHT, or GVT) methods or HST.

i have found the dorian yates method of training to be the most effective for myself, it is alot like HST, with 1-2working sets per exercise to failure.

always on -- I consider GVT to be dual factor, although I see why you wonder. But to me, if you squat 20 sets every day, you are not thinking single-factor (recovery) anymore.

I do dorian yates style right now, but it is definitely not the most effective way I've trained.

I have limited experience though, so please take it with a grain of salt.
