just another one of these stupid threads....here are my favorites in order though:

1. kyle morgan - misery signals
2.brann dailor - mastodon
3. justin foley - killswitch engage
4. sean reinert - cynic (dont know if theyre still around)

others include mike portnoy and danney carey but i didnt really consider them metal but they are among the greatest. how about u guys?

My nephew is the best drummer in metal.......:-)
His band is called Shock Therapy. They'll be huge one day!

Brann Dailor could be better if he like learned to play a standard beat, and not snare fills for an entire 7 minute track.

Drummers like Foley are a dime a dozen in metalcore.

I'll you who's awesome. Kevin Talley. I don't know who he's with at the moment, but he's done duties for The Red Chord and The Black Dahlia Murder. Dude is sick. I hate (HATE) the Red Chord, but my jaw was on the floor watching his drumming when I saw them.

Best drummer in mainstream metal: Jason Bittner or Chris Adler (Shadows Fall and Lamb of God, respectively).

This really is an objective (subjective? One of those) opinion kinda question. I guess it all depends on your taste, so I won't knock your choices. Unless you choose like Korn's drummer or something. Then you're a retard. Whatever you think sounds the best to you, so don't take my above first two statements to heart. Just my opinions. But Talley is indeed retardedly talented.

I'm sure I could name any number of black and death metal drummers, especially those who play progressive music, and they'd top lists as well, but names escape me at the moment.

Faves (at least, off the top of my head):

1. Tomas Haake
2. Morgan Gandharva Ågren
3. Dave Witte
4. Chris Hakius
5. Tie: Davide Piovesan/Sean Reinert

Cynic just reformed and Sean Reinert is back on drums, but Malone isn't with them and that's kind of lame.

Kevin Talley is currently wasting his talents with Cattle Decapitation and Daath.

Bitner was one I was gonna mention.

Steve Bolognese is another damn good drummer. He was in Beyond the Embrace, and recently joined Into Eternity.

You know who's really underappreciated? John Stanier. Dude is solid as a rock when it comes to keeping time.

i agree with dailor. hes a fucking MONSTER.

i dont know their names cuz i enver look up band member names, but the dude from nile and the dude from fucking cryptopsy are fucking SICK. also the dude from all shall perish (new drummer on the 2nd album). lololol iron maiden. ya ok.

Nile has had a shitload of drummers because Karl Sanders is a dick. If you're talking about the last album, meet George Kollias.

Flo Mounier is the popular choice for cool metal drummer dude, and he's solid when it comes to playing death metal. I've never heard him outside of Cryptopsy, so can't say much about him.

And All Shall Perish is...what's a nice thing I can say about them...better than most deathcore bands? Can't stand 'em personally. I think we've talked about this.

bittners real good. mainly i wanted to refer to foley in redtide or even blood has been shed pre-killswitch but now hes in kse so thats all i could say.

Mike Terrana
Flo Mounier
Tony Lauriano
Max Duhamel
Martin Maurais
All the dudes from Running Wild (lol)

Hmm, well, drums can pretty much make or break a great metal riff... My favortie drummer is The Rev, from A7x. I think his drums go great with the guitar.

Anyone who says Lars Ulrich is a moron. :)

Edit: Shadows Fall has a pretty phat drummer as well, i just bought thier 3 latest cds, they kick ass

Tommy Aldridge is King!!! All these new drummers will prolly say Tommy was their biggest influence.

Engaged in crime I grasp my throat
Enraged my mind starts to smoke
Enforce mental overload
Angry again angry again ...

Aldridge was cool in BOA and Bark at the Moon, but I don't remember him being on anything else of note. He was kind of the guy that you called when you were short a drummer and needed to tour.

The "king" of double bass.

Mike Portnoy-Dream Theater
Vinnie Paul-Pantera
Tommy Lee is one of the all time greats in rock. You guys seem to be leaning more towards speed drummers.

Mike Mangina > Hellhammer if we're talking speed.

Nice... but is the guy metal? lol

I believe Hellhammer was recorded at 17 BPS. I think it was something going around the 'zines years ago. I have no source, nor do I know if it's a record (I doubt it).

I personally lean towards the speed drummers because it's what I listen to and am familiar with. I'm sure there are some absolutely godly blues drummers out there, but I wouldn't be able to accurately judge their talent. Same goes with some of the slower metal drummers: I don't know enough tech stuff about the drums to be able to judge them well. I've always had a fascination with the fast guys, though. Nicholas Barker's performance on Cradle's Vempire and Dusk albums were amazing at the time they were released. (Has he OD'd yet? lol)

:cow:

He plays for Steve Vai and Annihilator and crap like that. So, kind of.

No speed drummers on my list duder (Witte is debatable).

I like Vinnie because he's solid, but I never thought of him as a "great" drummer or anything. Good time keeper. And I hate Tommy Lee so much, but that's a completly different story.

Oh that one armed guy.

From Def leopard

Rick Allen

Metal is all over the map. Check out Stronger Than All on Far Beyond Driven by Pantera. There is a point where metal just becomes extremely fast noise to me, and that song is where the line gets drawn for me. If you want to get pumped for a cardio workout Stronger Than All is the way to get the ball rollin'.

Another good metal drummer is Scott Travis who played for Fight and currently Judas Priest. His shit on the Fight CD's and Painkiller is pretty hype.

Drummers will tell you that Tommy Lee is a top three all time rock drummer. Just because he fucked your girlfriend or something, that's no reason to hate on his skills behind the kit.

I guess this all really depends on your definition of metal. Death to false metal. Up the Irons.

You guys dont know jack about drummers!! NIEL PEART from RUSH is the best drummer ever..some of these guys are very good, but dont come close to Neal Peart.. go to neilpeart.net

Haha, awww, you're so cute! You're all, like, defending him and stuff. That's precious! *pinches cheeks*

This just in, the guy that can't spell Neil knows more than us.

*looks at thread title*

Oh, that still says metal, right.

But, I don't disagree with you. Peart is top five all time when it comes to rock.

So that is what happened then. Hey bro, I'm sorry about that. Hey, you're better off without her.

I'm just saying that actual drummers like his work. I'm a guitar player that would rather play drums. When I go to shows I watch drummers. Tommy is an interesting drummer to watch. He makes it look easy. I like drummers that look effortless, and he's one.

Believe it or not, the best drummer I have ever witnessed is a local guy that played in a cover band.

Why are you trying so hard to be Ultra Dick: Slayer of Differing Opinons when the whole discussion is subjective anyway? That's what I want to know. "BORK BORK REAL DRUMMERS SAID SO BECAUSE I CAN'T FORM MY OWN OPINIONS BORK BORK GADERK. REAL ONES." You don't have to be a tough guy with me, I'll still hold you.

And where was I "dissing" his skills? I hate the man, not the game, baby.

Oh, wait, another tired "burn" from 101 Cliche Message Board Defenses is incoming...

I'm with Flah here... it seems lots of posers have trouble distinguishing metal from rock.

BTW, anyone that uses the phrase, "Death to false metal!" must solemnly acknowledge Manowar as the supreme Kings of Metal, else they be smitten down by the wrath of the gods.

(Manowar's newest album, Gods of War, will be available in the US on April 3rd. Hail and kill!)

:cow:

I believe I said actual drummers not real drummers. Meaning, people who actually play drums say good things about his skills. If you hate the guy, that's cool. You are the Ultra Dick in this exchange. I offered a few guys that I like, and you say that you hate one of them as a person. Okay, that's cool.
I formed my own opinions, and T.L. was merely an add on.

You're just like the guy at work who asks me "who's the best guitar player in the world", and I just look at him like...How can you come up with an answer to that question? No matter what I say, I'm wrong.

And just for the record...Manowar does rule.

Are you serious? Dude, I just said I didn't like the guy and you freaked the fuck out like you had to "defend yo' boy" or some silly macho posing shit. Then, you tried to belittle my intelligence as a music listener saying, "ALL THESE DRUMMERS SAY GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM, SO HE IS GOOD." Great, a lot of people say good things about Jesus, doesn't mean I buy into it.

It could've been a simple exchange.

Me: I don't like Tommy.
You: Why?
Me: I think he's a douche.
You: Oh. But his drumming?
Me: Okay.
You: SHOUT AT THE DEVIL.
Me: Indeed.

Or, you know, we could've argued our points intelligently instead of you acting like a closeminded jackass and falling back on lame shit like, "Real drummers like him." What does he do for you? I don't care what other people think, I want to know what you think.

And I said something because, hey, look at that, we're in a discussion forum and I was trying to get some discussin' going. Who knew? Discussion on a forum. Someone cue the More You Know music.

You're just like the guy at work who asks me "who's the best guitar player in the world", and I just look at him like...How can you come up with an answer to that question? No matter what I say, I'm wrong.
Have you ever read any of my posts before? Really? I'm amazed that you think I'm that guy, given my history, on this board no less, stating that there's no universal truth, no right or wrong to these questions about music. There's no definite. I even had the privilege of putting together a lecture on these very ideas.

But, okay, yeah. I'm totally that guy. Sure. Any evidence to support that? None? Okay.

Ha, I don't even remember writing this. Man, I am the Ultra Dick.

Yeah, I've had that before. Damn benzos and alcohol. If I was slamming beers like Joey Demaio in the middle of the bar, I want to be able to remember it, dammit!

And yes, for the integrity of this thread, I have intentionally refrained from mentioning Scott Columbus. I just couldn't go that far... *cries and repents*

:cow:

Thank you for coming to your senses. I was somewhat worried about your reading comprehension skills for a while, but now I realize you are okay.

I think he might be playing for Testament now. I think I read that somewhere.

Yeah, he's in Testament now. They're currently writing songs or something.

I have some old Testement tapes somewhere, but my only tape player is in my boombox in my gym at home, so I've rarely listened to them.

If Nick is in the group, I'll be waiting in line for their newest release.

:cow:

As a drummer i say Danny Carey (Tool) and Vinnie Paul (Pantera) Hands down!!!

P.S. If you say Lars Ulrich you are clearly not a drummer
