is the stationary bike anywhere near as effective as jogging?... i hate jogging but i'm thinking that i'd probably have to ride the stationary bike for 3 days to equal a 20 minute jog. does anyone know how effective the stationary bike is?

Treadmill was tested to be the most efficient for fat burning. I walk and throw in jogging intervals. BTW, my treadmill died tonight. She held in there for five years of abuse.

I use the bike a lot, but do it in interval style and find it to be really effective, the point of cardio is to keep your heart rate in the target range, which the bike will do

I don't think there is any one cardio exercise that is more effective as long as your get your heart rate high enough. This might be easier to do while jogging which is why is has a better repuation for this, but if you put the resistance high enough and go fast enough on a stationary bike you can get your heart rate up just as high.

Had some spelling errors that were bothering me, had to edit. :)

The bike i don't like b/c it limits the muscles being used to just solely a part of your leg. Whereas jogging/walking you would use calves, shoulders b/c youre swing them, you use more upper and lower body. and b/c of this you would burn more calories.

riskybizz007,

Thats a good point. However, I find that the stationary bike is the least interfering with weight training. Its hard for me to do cardio after doing legs, and running would be out of the question. I also find running to be very destructive on your muscles and joints. Anyways, thats just my $.02.
