off topic a bit, but i think the best book i've read this year is probably "sea biscuit" by laura hillenbrand. don't let the subject matter (a racehorse) discourage you...go to amazon and check out the reader reviews; everyone loves it. i'm not a horse racing fan, btw.
this frequently happens in many art forms, be it music , writing, etc. Some people try to maintain an air of sophistication by disdaining anything popular, regardless of the quality of the work. There is a word for these individuals...idiots.
you're right. if "critics" gave good reviews to what is popular, then they would be completely useless (not to say that they are useful) -- to justify their own positions they have to dislike what the public likes. no one needs an "expert" to tell them to see what other people like.
