bench press on the floor?

I saw a video on the web of a guy doing dumbbell presses lying on the floor instead of a bench. Does this work? I thought you were supposed to bring the dumbbells down to your chest, but that seems impossible if your elbows hit the floor...

I suppose you could but it would hit your triceps or shoulders a hell of a lot more then chest, plus it would be uncomfortable as fuck.

The exercise is known as Floor Presses. It is something that is used by Powerlifters who are having trouble with their lockout, and are stalling about 3-5 inches off the chest. they work much like board presses or rack presses, but are a little different.

I didn't have a bench for a while and really enjoyed doing them. A nice alternative, if you have too.

If you don't powerlift, but you have no bench to lie on, would doing floor presses instead help you increase your size/strength. I.e would increasing your floor press from say 100kg to 160kg help pack on some size as well as have a strength carryover to the bench without ever needing to actually bench press?

really, the only way that you would see a strength carry over is if you are having trouble with your lockout. if you are lifting in gear (with a bench shirt) then the floor press will help tremendously when lifting shirted. As far as lifting raw, you need to also do work for the bottom end of the lift (reversal/gettng the bar off you chest). if you dont have a bench, make due with what you got, and keep doing the floor presses, since you enjoy doing them. when you have the opportunity to get a bench, make sure that you are working your full range

we do floor presses for our baseball workout (University of Minnesota) It reduces the stress on our shoulders but i still feel the burn and enjoy doing them instead of normal bench presses, it prevents the arch of the back

Thanks. Do you do them regularly or just once in a while?

I tried to give you karma, but I don't think I have much to give since I an a newbie. Good luck at school.
