Bench Press Max

Last night at the gym in between sets I see this guy about to bench 405. Him and his spotter psych themselves up and then he puts in a mouthpiece (??) and gets on the bench . His spotter gives him a liftoff and the bar SMACKS him the chest lifts about 2 inches and the spotter helps him the rest of the way. He does 3 more reps the same way. Both of them lifting the bar of his chest.
He gets up and they're talking shit about how he nailed it.

Man, don't I feel like a jackass thinking he couldn't get it. I think I could double my max this way or at least break a rib trying.

I love the guys who load up the bar, ask you to spot them and tell you they want to get 8 reps, get down on the bench and barely crank out one rep, you have to deadlift the weight off them for 7 more reps, get up, then ask you "did you have to help me on that last one?"

Strider - you and everyone else knows that if a guy benches like that, there is no way in HELL he will be caught dead in a squat rack.

Leg extensions, maybe - but not the squat.

eh I went up to 405 yesterday but my shoulder started to hurt when I brought it down and barely got the first one up, then used help on the second..last week I did 395 for 3 I guess Ill just have to stay at 405 till I nail it for 3-4 good ones...thats my goal at least

At least you guys don't seem to have any trouble finding spotters. At my gym, I rarely do triceps because I can never find someone to spot me on tricep kickbacks.

LOL :)

If the dude can push 405 off his chest for even 2 inches, he has some strength, but doing that shit is a quick route to a fucked up rib or cracked sternum. When I was 17, I thought I'd cracked my sternum b/c I dropped 325 on my chest semi-hard. The pain was there for about 2-3 days, but then went away. I was lucky. I was even using good form and a spot, I just definitely wasnt ready for 325 that day (but I got it within a week or 2).

I know, but I have these types go from power movement to power movement and do rediculous weight. They'll put like 5 plates on each side and do a quater squat, yell as loud as the can, and walk around like they own the place. LOL!

I still remember this skinny punk in college, weighed about 150 fully dressed and put 275 lbs on the bench press bar. He spent about 5 minutes getting himself al pysched up, pounding his fists, "yeah easy weight". Don't you know he sat his narrow down on the bench, the spotter gives him a liftoff, he brings it down to his chest and that bar didn't move upward a milimeter for the 10 seconds til the spotter started lifting for him. It was more like he was spotting the spotter for a set of upright rows.

It was from a year ago. I still have the clip. I'll see if I can upload it again sometime in the next few days. It is a goodie...

Somebody at the gym has been telling me for a few weeks that he squats my max for reps........to the point of trying to call me out in the gym lol. I squatted yesterday and some guy (who really is strong) told me about this morons squats.....his 'parallel' means dipping hips by 4-5 inches :)
