Anthrax said:BTW, do you know what was Ben Johnson's secret to leave the great Carl Lewis far behind ?
Winny alone is not enough for such a performance

Razorguns said:roids or no roids -- no human has EVER run that fast in recorded history.
I bet you 10 bucks even with steroids Carl could never run that time. That's like saying Ronnie Coleman could easily run 9.50 cuz he takes so many steroids. In relaity, steroids probably inhibits your ability to run fast, with all that muscle on your body. Hard to run 9.7 when you're 280.
framer said:I still remember watching that event live. That was one of the most impressive athletic performances I've ever seen. I still remember the freaked out facial expression on Carl Lewis. He couldn't believe how bad he had been beat. It wasn't even close. He blew the entire feild away.

Dial_tone said:The difference for me is I think drugs "made" Ben more than they made Carl Lewis. If you look at Ben's 100-meter times from 4-5 years prior to the '88 Oly's he was running high 10's, which isn't even remotely world class. I ran track at a D-II school in '83-84 and we had walk-ons running 10.6-7. Hell, Herschel Walker ran a 10.3 at 221 lbs while he was at Georgia. Carl ran a 10.6 in high school and was truly world-class from '80 thru '96. I met him at the NCAA's when they were at Duke. He is a bit full of himself but there is no doubt whatsoever he IS the greatest sprinter of all times.

The women's WR was 10.76 until FloJo busted a juiced up 10.49 so poor Ben would've been lucky to beat the chicks before '88. bluepeter said:I don't think so, Ben already had the world record (9.83) from a year previous at the World Championships and had run sub 10 many times prior to that. I've been looking for something outlining his best times by year but can't find anything..............
Anthrax said:... and at that time 99.99% of the people thought Carl Lewis had no serious competitors![]()
Longhorn85 said:You're wrong here. Ben and Carl had been competing closely all summer. Didn't Ben win at the Worlds in Rome that year?
Longhorn85 said:Now you want to relish in a Canadian sprinter kicking an American's butt? Donovan Bailey over Michael Johnson in Toronto at 300 meters. That was an ass whoopin'!
Dial_tone said:This is all moot now that Tim Montgomery has since bettered even Ben's DQ'd record to 9.78
