Being your true self

New member
Are you your true "self"?

Many of us are programmed/conditioned to believe we have to live a certain way and don't ever focus on what we REALLY want.
You get married, you have kids, you buy a home then you realize what you really wanted was to be single, travel and become an artist.

The understanding of the self is the most important insight that any individual can have in life

Do you stay stuck in life because you're comfortable and fear change?

thank god all the gals i blew it recklessly in, none of them conceived.
no way i could do my job with a mess of dirtttyyy ass kids to tend after

I'm different then most I suppose. One thing is for sure is I haven't lived a conventional life. Change is good. If I told you the events that have occured in my life so far, you wouldn't even believe me. I'm sure there are others with there own stories as well.

I'm listening.......

"True self? We're all hypocrates and liars. To ourselves and to each other.

Tell me. Would you have any dreams if someone didn't give them to you in advance. Who's puppet are you? Who do you serve? Who do you live for in the name of yourself? Or are you the best liar of all and believe that you're your own person?"

Exactly, but some people get to a point where they decide to be true to themselves.

I'm not living my true self, but am working on it

when you decide to be true to yourself, you lose a lot of people in your life b/c most of them you hated to start with.

I've known my best friend since I was 12. We've been through a lot together. But it's come to a point where I actually don't love her anymore, but I fake liking her.

"There is no true self, Christian. There is only what I tell you."

B movies are great for these!

Actually, Christian was the name of the guy he was talking to. But it works the other way.

insert every self-help book on the planet.

It's called mid-life crisis, and the direct result of being sheep in life doing exactly what you're told, like a good little worker bee -- then realizing you've just wasted your life away accomplishing dick. Except winning a few arguments on EF. :)

But hey, you banged chicks and partied during your 20's and party would never end right?

I don't think I'm having a mid life crisis. My illness has opened my eyes to what's more important

I dropped my "best friend" when I learned what a real friend was.
we met when I was 7, he was my best man, then I dropped him when I was about 31.

I have a brother inlaw I hate being around because he's not satisfied with the way I live my life---so fuck him.

well, i'm the only person in my family who is an atheist, and have been since i was 13.

i am an artist, just like I said I wanted to be since I was in grade school. During the day i'm on the creative side of things that earns money, and in my spare time, i do the kind of art that i love doing.

so yeah, i think i am.

Shit if I couldn't be me... I would freak out... but as far as being the true self, I think the innate pattern of the true self gravitates naturally toward the logos or what we would call virtue... it is only during these confused times when our current lack of self knowledge has us all growing familiar with confusion and heaviness, distraction, agitation, restlessness, and irritation... the true self is really shackled under neath the surface of all this... the true self is the embodiment of wisdom... not smarts, but the understanding of self and other, no longer driven by the need to seek pleasure and maintain security at all costs... good stuff man
Like everyone else here I'm working on me... long road though.

Well thanks for being so understanding pretty fox. :)

I'm I being true to myself? Yes. Since the age of 14. On my own I was. Always done what it is I wanted to do. I have walked away from jobs, lost friends, relationships, and sad to say, but even some family.(I love my family) With all that being said, I was able to do things in life that many people can never say they did. I've come a long ways and I still have dreams for myself. Have to admit though. A part of me just wants to settle down and have a family. I tried the whole famiiy thing and didn't workout. Never even got married but got a beautiful child. Trying to balance a life time dream and trying to build a family isn't easy to do. When I finally accomplish both, I will be complete.

I like to fit & find the middle ground with half decent people.

I have an uncle in his 70s who is "an individual", "wants to do his own thing" likes to preach about how impossible it is to "be an individual in today's world" a model of cynicism & loathing of the modern world & its people.

He is the loneliest person I know. I'll pass thanks. People don't want to hear *your* "brilliance" & "extreme awareness" 24/7 about religion being bullshit, governments repressing us, everyone being sheep ad nauseum.

Look, if you were really that fucking brilliant you wouldn't be wasting time preaching online or to people in real life that you haven't completely alienated yet several hours daily or working a typical job, you'd be out there toppling oppressive governments, ending wars and saving mankind. You're not, so do yourself and everyone around you a big fucking favour, put on a fake smile & indulge yourself in trivial bullshit.

I am my true self.. Much more tame now days from when I was younger though

I have a kid because I wanted one.
I have a college education and career because crime will eventually put you in a box ;)
I have a woman at home, mother of my child. Gave her a ring but we are not married yet and do not have plans of marriage anytime soon.
I just bought a house at the beginning of the year because it was really cheap, and im sick of funneling money into rent and not seeing any return.

I know myself very well and know at all times exactly what I want, and I usually go get it.

I consider myself to be a dynamic person, accepting of change constantly evolving making sure that I am secure and can continue to do the things that i do.

I havent been..... I realized the past year or 2 that I have just been drifting along in my life listening to what people "think" is the best for me and what I "should" do, but I never listened to myself, I heard myself, but never listened. Its hard to really be true to yourself because so many people judge.............but once you get over what people think then you can be true to yourself. Most people will say they dont care what anyone else thinks....but most of them are full of shit....it takes alot of work to truly think like that.
