Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, known as MCA, dead at 47

Rapper Adam Yauch, a third of the trailblazing hip-hop act the Beastie Boys, has died aged 47.
Yauch, who performed as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009 after discovering a tumor in his parotid gland.
The band's management posted a lengthy statement on the Beastie Boys website:
It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam "MCA" Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer.
Initially dismissed as a trio of jokers who scored a fluke novelty hit with Fight for Your Right (To Party) on their 1986 debut License to Ill, the Beastie Boys would grow into one of the most ambitious and influential acts of the 1990s.

The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, but Yauch was unable to attend due to his health. His cancer treatments also delayed the release of the group's most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2.
In addition to his career in music, Yauch was a film-maker and passionate Buddhist and defender of Tibetan rights. Yauch directed many of the band's music videos under the name Nathanial Hörnblowér, including So What'cha Want, Intergalactic and the more recent Make Some Noise.
Yauch, who is survived by his wife, Dechen Wengdu, and their daughter, Losel, wrote a letter to his bandmates and fans for last month's hall of fame induction: "I'd like to dedicate this to my brothers Adam and Mike," he wrote. "They walked the globe with me. It's also for anyone who has ever been touched by our band. This induction is as much ours as it is yours."

My threads usually fail miserably, so it's good that you started one too. MCA deserves 2 threads.

Wow!

I am a fan and also realized I'm old...I can't believe he was 47!!

MCA will be missed greatly. Beastie boys "licensed to ill" brings back the greatest memories for me and my friends growing up. I was 12 when that album hit, and I literally wore the cassette out I listened to it so much and had to get another. Then when CDs hit big, it was one of the first I purchased.

RIP MCA

^^^ This x2! This also brings back memories from high school days, Beastie Boys, Faith No More, Metallica, Van Halen, and many more...and 47 isn't old Cali ;)...like Brown said aging like fine wine! Although when you mention cassettes Rick damn, like when they would get eaten up in the cassette player and you pull it out and it is all tangled, or you had to use a pencil to wind it back up into the cassette body, pretty funny...we still had vinyl records then, I think my Licensed to Ill was a record...how about 8 track tapes? Used to listen to my dads Stones, CCR, and Jefferson Airplane 8 tracks in his car in the 70's...ahhh, good times!

God bless MCA...no longer suffering from a horrible condition!

Pay attention my intention is to bust a move
I drink 40s and cans and bottles and sixes
Between the turntables keep the vodka and the mixes

beastie boys got little to no love amongst the hip hop crown that i've noticed.

Now A Days "Hip Hop" is GARBAGE, and the artists are selfish and UN-greatful.

I cant believe they make millions on the shit they put out.

at 34 yrs old my hip hop tasted has dwindled...used to be all i listened to, anymore i just can't relate to it.
esp over the last few years, the quality and content (content being more and more political...the last thing i want to hear is obama cocksucking on a rap song) has sucked.
i'd guess those that make millions end up broke as fuck a few yrs later once their shine has worn off.

political? They don't know or even care about politics.

All they do now is make up words, and talk about how rich they are.
I don't think many can relate anymore.

Beastie Boys told stories.

meh, maybe you don't listen to much current rap?
lotsa obama dick riding and half-ass understanding of politics, hell jezzy even did a song called "my president" about ali bama...a few months ago prodigy was giving a lecture at whatever college cornel west (sp?) is a prof. at, and you shoulda hard the pea-brain speaking of poltics, hilarious to me.
when i listen to music i don't want to hear political BS, i listen to escape from that shit.
now dubstep is about all i listen to

Radio sucks...play same songs over and over again all day! I don't listen to Rap or Hip Hop, my little girl who is 6 knows pretty close to all the words to several Rolling Stones tunes, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, and just good ol' Rock-n-Roll! All the rest isn't music IMO...if it doesn't have guitar, bass, drums, keyboards/piano, brass, or instruments in general...it is just computerized sound with singing, if you want to call some of it singing.

outkast, redman, atmosphere, and a few others are about all i can stomach these days.
seen that video yrs ago, posted it here, too funny all three of those wackjobs suck and will be broke or in jail 10 yrs from now (gucci is already in and out of the clink)

I remember when they came out with their first video on MTV (I don't remember the name, but "You gotta fight for your right to party!)........................ Probably about 1980-81. They weren't in a category at all. I think I'd have called it comedy (rap). I can't say I'm their biggest fan, but I do have some of their albums someplace. Definitely super-clean compared to anything rap or hip-hop today.
