Beach or mountains?

Which do you prefer? And do you have a special place in your memory?

I think that my ideal would be six months at each. :)

I love the beach, but I hate the crowds. That is why I like going to the beach in fall/winter. I love to sit on the beach and watch and listen to the surf as it comes in. Watching the sunset over the ocean or marsh is one of the prettiest views you can ever have.

I grew up visiting my grandma in the NC mountains and it was so peacful and relaxing. When I was a kid I thought it was boring, now I have learned to enjoy the solitude that comes with being in the mountains where there is no street light around, and it is so dark that you can't see your hand in front of your eyes. Then in the days you can see a deer cross your path, and even see the traces of where a bear might have been the night before.

I kinda have both where I am, on the Palos Verdes peninsula in Los Angeles. Right on the ocean but about 1,500 ft above sea level, a 3 mile drive up. I can see most of L.A., the mountain ranges in the far distance, the ocean is about 3-4 miles in the other direction with Catalina Island about a 30 minute ferry ride out. Given a choice I think I'd take the mountains. I'm from Jaw-ja so I like a more woodsy feel, plus I got this thing about sharks.

In Banner Elk, NC there is a mountain called Beech Mountain. There used to be an amusement park at the very top of the mountain called, "Land of Oz."
I don't know if it is still there anymore.

In the fall, I would go up there almost every week with a friend of mine (the amusement park was closed and they were getting ready for ski season) and sit on a rock at the top of that mountain that had a patch of grass growing in the center of it. We would sit there and talk about life and do our college studies and shoot the shit.

I looked back now and realize how special those times were. The scenery was breathtaking and the air was always cool and crisp. Good times.

I love the beach. We have some incredible beaches and coastline here in Sydney. Given our enormous strecth of coastline, it's easy to find a beach that isn't crowded.

I love going for a surf, so invigorating.

I live in driving distance to the ocean (South side) but I live on the harbor/sound side on LI and I love the beach on the North side - it's less busy, no sand in your bathing suit and there's a sweet and very unrealized swimming hole I like to hit.

The ocean beaches are fun with friends but the summer crowd bites - the ocean side is a dream in late spring and most of fall.

That said I would live in the mountains of Colorado, Idaho or Wyoming if I had to leave the beaches. There's something about the endless mountains, blue skies, clouds, fresh sweet air and the sound of water cascading along the rocks.

Marry me.

It's ok - I'll come to you.

I live by the beach, when i'm not at school...love it. Never been a fan of mountains, don't really get the point of the mountains...what's so good about them?

That's one place I really want to go!!! Have any pics of where you stayed?

I stayed EVERYWHERE! We went to like 10-12 islands in 3 weeks...so only a few nights on each island.

Get this...I still haven't developed the film from the camera I brought. I don't even know if I still have it...but I'll ask the people I went with if they have any uploaded onto their computer. I'll get back to ya on that one.

And they have beaches AND really cool mountains there...can't climb most of them, but they look cool.

Also, the natives are REALLY nice...gotta go to a village if you get over there.

Both.

When I lived in Atlanta, my ex and I would go to the mountains every other weekend. When we had first met, on our fourth date we agreed to go spend Saturday night in Amicolola at the mountain lodge. We got there, and it snowed all night and the roads were frozen and closed for the next three days while it continued to snow and freeze. No one was allowed to leave the lodge and attempt to drive down the mountain (they housed and fed us for free while we were snowed in). We mostly went to Highlands, NC the most.

Nowdays, it is the beach. When I walk out in the water and stand there knee deep in the warm crystal waters, feeling the sun on my shoulders, hearing the lull of the waves gently wash by and look out and see nothing but blue horizons, I feel so refreshed. Not a high energy type refreshment, but an inner spiritual one. The ocean truly does heal people.

I like both, but I'm spoiled by freshwater which is tough to find with a beach and big mountains nearby. I would ideally like to have a home on both the east coast and west coast, Oregon/nothern California, and Maine.

What about lakes? I would take lakes anyday over both. Especially lake travis. I would move there so quick if I could it would make you head spin.
